Leaving to Norway...
    #1757741 - 07/28/03 11:49 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

All right, I'm leaving to Norway on Thursday, for a year.
I'm at my mom's right now, and tomorrow, I'm going to my grandma's. Wednesday night, I'm coming back here, and then Thursday, she is taking me up to the airport. My grandma and grandpa are going with, for the first week (my mom wanted to take me to the airport, since she was going to see me off). Since last Thursday, I've traveled down to Nebraska, all around the town where my relatives are, back on Saturday, up a couple of hours north to my uncle's to get my tattoo.. The Monday before we left to Nebraska, I went to my grandma's, came back Wednesday night...
Anyways, I'm getting hit with all sorts of different feelings... like I'm forgetting something important to do to get ready or something. It's this monumental change, and I don't have a lot of monumental changes, you know? I feel like I'm not ready, that it couldn't be THIS Thursday that I'm leaving. (I'm not having second thoughts, or anything, and I can't wait to go). It's just completely weird.
Plus, there is all the thoughts I have, of something that I've come to accept, and then, I think "Wait, that's done with now. I'm leaving to a different country for a while. That is going to be totally different."
Has anyone gone through this? It's fucked up as hell.. Like I have SO much I have to do to get ready, to prepare...
Thanks for any help.
Peace.

Just go with the flow of life and where it takes you. All those worries solve nothing. Your only gone for a year right? Any unfinished buisness back home you can take care of later, but Im sure its just " pre large life change jitters".

I dismiss these thoughts as that too, but it is very bizzare, the way it feels.
I am ready, and that is the thing.. all these thoughts about this and that.
It isn't going to be much colder than here, actually, because of the Atlantic winds.. we're on Flatoy island, right off of Bergen (connected with a bridge). Same climate, basically.
Peace.

I believe I'll have access where I'm staying (the guy works on computers and all, and I guess they have some moohlah.. she was a foreign exchange student, after all). See, my grandma hosted her, and they have kids now, and I watch them during the day (get paid to go).
I definitely want to stay connected to the Shroomery (my home away from home, hehe).
I mean, I have my bass guitar and amp, I have my cd's, my clothes (cept the ones I'll be getting when we go shopping), and that's about it... I can't imagine why I'm having these thoughts that I'm not prepared. It's crazy.
Peace.

Well, a year sort of is a long time, at least when you are living it.
It hasn't even been a year since I dropped out of school to play guitar (I consider that to be a milestone in my life, my first active step towards heading into my lifetime obsession.. one of the smartest moves I've made, too). When I look back, a lot of stuff has happened since then, and it seems like it has been forever since then. And I dropped out in December (Four fucking months to go!)
See, it never dawned on me how long a year really is. See, basically all the other years of my life that I've had, I've been in school. The fucking years go awfully quick while in school, because of the straight fucking routine... My recent life hasn't been all that much routine.
So, I think it seem to be a long time, since I plan on enjoying every minute of it. Can't fucking wait!

Enjoy Bergen and the fjords.

And I recommend you get your hands on some Linie Aquavit.
This is the kind you should look for:

There are some incredible, uncrowded waves in Norway. I will get there someday. I heard it's expensive though.

Learn to surf, and make a trip to Amsterdam.

Hmm... waves? I was thinking that I would love to learn how to surf, just because of how amazing it would be, to be able to do something like that (no waves in Wisconsin and Iowa).
The trip to Amsterdam, I am planning on. We're actually going to be there for an hour and a half, waiting for the plane switch, but there are no shops in the airport, and I won't be able to run off and find some, which sucks.
I don't drink, especially not beer, so I probably won't be getting any of that (the bottle looks sweet as hell, though).
Peace.

Nope, I've never left the country... only been a couple of states beyond my where I live.
I used to live in Wisconsin, although I'm in Iowa now (where I used to live), visiting relatives. Tomorrow is the big day.
Schlorch told me about it, like it is a mix between scotch and vodka, or something. I will drink hard alcohol from time to time!
And, is it true about the waves? My grandma doesn't think there would be any.. but I am very interested in learning how to surf.
Hell, maybe I'll see you around sometime.
Peace.

Yes it is true about the waves. I have friends who've done trips to that corner of the world and you should see the pictures.

Norway has a lot of coastline, I hear access is a problem sometimes, but you can figure it out if you want. Sounds like they have a great road system. Wetsuit technoligy is allowing people to get waves where they couldn't before (Antarctica anybody?) and believe me Norway water is pretty cold, you will need a thick piece of rubber to keep warm. If you are really interested in this, then get a 5/4mm with a built in hood. You will need gloves and booties.

Most of the surfing I think is done around the town of Stavanger, wich is west and then some of Oslo. I bet Oslo and surrounding areas can get waves during the right storms though. I know Sweden gets waves too.

Also, yes there are waves in Wisconsin! Lake Michigan has a lot of fetch and depth, same with Lake Superior. When a storm tracks up on the Upper Michigan Penninsula there is a very dedicated and hardy crew out of Racine and Sheboygan who surf the Lake even when it's -0 outside. Or as long as the lake doesnt start to get slushy. There are in fact surfable waves on all of the great lakes. As well as Lake Tahoe :] (Been there done that)

Yeah, I'll definitely look into it. It'd be quite some fun, and Rob Trujillo seems to like it.. hehe
I was never around the lakes, we were in Southwest Wisconsin.
Fetch and depth? Care to teach a young cowboy? Also, is it pretty easy to get started? I'm really interested in learning, but I don't even have a lot of swimming experience..
Anyways, thanks for that link, the pictures are excellent. Think it might be possible to rent one of those suits?
Peace.

Yeah, if they'll let me get the fucking things over there..
I have to put the amp in a box, and I have this carboard box that Ihave to tape together. They said the bass has to be in a hardshell case, and I have a gig-bag.... I'm wrapping it in a blanket before I go...
Hopefully they don't be dicks about it.
Anyways, I've never been told that I'm golden. hehe. I like that descriptive word, golden. Can't say I'm golden, myself, but I try...
Thanks for the words.
Peace.

Fetch would be the distance from one shore to the other. Wind from storms creates waves, the more fetch you have in any given body of water the longer the wind can blow against the waters surface area. Given a storm is producing high enough winds and they are sustained, waves can start to form and then travel from point A and peel away at point B.

Depth is also needed for these waves to be of any size; think of a wave as not only being on the surface of the water but it's actually a band of energy reaching from the surface to the floor. The deeper it is, the more energy is going to be... compacted into one jacking heaving wall of water as the wave moves from deeper to shallower water.

That's a basic jist of water knowledge...

There should still be a surf shop in Stavanger called Surfsentrum. I have no adress though. Stavanger is SW of Oslo on E18, right on the coast. If you go there, look around and find this place, you might be able to rent a suit and some sort of board from them. There aren't many of us in Norway so they will probably be happy to see you and even point you in the direction of some waves. Oslo may have surf shops now too.

I don't want to misguide you by saying it's an easy thing to do. You would have to go several times to get a feel for it at all. Once you finally paddle into, and plant you feet on your board, and start to fly it's all fucking worth it though. Once you can stand up it's rail to rail turning, somewhat like snowboarding in really good powder, kinda. Don't get discouraged though if you want to learn, go for it. There's nothing better then a surfer who lives in Norway, but is from Wisconsin- now that's fucking keen.
