Re: Depression [Re: Ped]

Gee we really are brothers.  My story is very similar although the details of course are very personal.

And I'm glad to hear the whole story, however brief as I was wondering about you for several years.

However I see no selfless act on your part.  You acted because it annoyed you and you empathized with the imagined other who became you mirrored and again annoyed.

I'd watch out for that shit if I was you.  Trying to right wrongs around here can lead one to an acid stomach and some sleepless nights with the mind running amok.  Not saying you necessarily but I'm learning the hard slow way. I'm telling you not as any selfless act on my part but just passing the time and reminding myself to be careful. Your post just made me think on it.

You are one crazy interesting dude though and I'm glad to see you posting.  For entertainment of course.

You might not be able to make a major difference in the world but you can make a difference in your own little world.  You can make a difference on your property or in your community.

That's a good point.  I personally have narrowed it down a little more to the confines of my own home.  Outside it's all wasteland imo.

Spot on.  Well bespoken m'lad, fully all of what you said.  Now I'm British: the best thing to pretend to be if your aim is t'send 'em up all anti-clockwise till you're chuffed up enough to get your portrait hangin' up next t'the Queen's down at the ol' C&E.  I wonder how much more aggro'll be required before we all stop bein' so bloody blinkered, bitin' our own arm's off at the blatant, blindin' obvious!

Now if we could only bring Sinbad back.  I'd really enjoy his perspective about the end of the Roman Empire.  No dramatic end mind you.  Just a slow slip slide further into darkness.

I have realized that regular exercise and the occasional sex helps with depression... but it still doesn't change my world view.

Yep I feel you on that.

I hate people; being a person I hate myself.

Even if I focus my attention elsewhere there still exists an obvious depression and I feel like it's something I've conditioned myself to feel starting as a child for some reason.

I have little insight on what causes me to feel like this. Those were some cool posts Ped, even though most of it flew right over me.

Care to expand on this one?

Re: Depression [Re: Cognitive_Shift]

I have developed many techniques to help with depression  moment to moment.  Each day is a war of sort. I've honed my weapons and skills but I know the enemy has also.  Each day the outcome is up for grabs. Some days I kill the bear and some days the bear kills me.

Last night I dreamed I was in a tiny free campground in the middle of nowhere in Eastern Oregon's High Desert.  It was the end of the season and there was only one other person there.  Then a camper pulled in and it was made up like a gypsy wagon. Very cool.  Out stepped the Moody Blues and played a concert for the two of us.  We chatted when it was over and they packed and said they were headed for Alabama.  It was sad to see them go.  I knew it would be back to that lonely campground and I had no idea where I was going.

See what I mean?:satansmoking:

This is the reply I got. Much easier to reply to than the OP wouldn't you agree?

Anyway, one of the best pieces of advice I've ever got was from a new age teacher who said "The world is your mirror". It wasn't original to him and he wasn't the be all end all but he had some interesting things to say. These negative viewpoints are interpretive and intimate. People do things because they have feelings and desires. They do so with or without finesse and with or without the various polar thought structures of what is right or wrong and whether wrong is right and right is wrong, etc.

It's my experience that actual movements away from states of depression are not marked by notable swings in the thought patterns but in the way we react to and consider our thought patterns and the world around us. It becomes a matter of priorities and expectations. Come down from that high place of judgment and place no investment in expected results. One will find they have nothing to loose but wrong ideas about how we should or shouldn't feel about how things are or how they appear to be or should be. Approaching it with a certain level of humility isn't a bad idea, but being pious about it or using kid gloves probably is. Being tenacious while being forgiving is probably a good idea as it takes time to change the frequency and nature of our thoughts.

If none of it truly matters, then what reason is there for having a problem? If there are problems without reason, how should we feel about it? That's the catch in that we think we must decide or know how to feel about anything at all... cause we don't and this eggs the problems, unrealistic expectations, cognitive dissonance between the way things seem and the way things should be, the way one is and the way one would like to be. That's not to say there aren't local reasons for problems, but the question of existentialism ultimately isn't a problem. It's where the solution is found.

Can you really blame two people for being happy go lucky or wanting to make a difference? If they're wrong they'll find out soon enough with or without my help. But if I begrudge another for a spontaneous instance of happiness, I begrudge it to myself as well.

The world is your mirror. It seems a good starting place for a dialogue with ones self in light of depression.

I don't have anything positive in my life.  I go to work for some shit job, i'm told by my co-workers i should go out and buy the latest thing i don't really need... I'm supposed to go out and consume MORE and and work to consume MORE... when in reality all of this consuming is destroying the very fabric we care for.  We need to be consuming LESS.

I don't think there is hope for MY future.  I might matter to my friends and family, but do they REALLY care about me???  Prolly not.  They care about me because of things i provide them emotionally and physically.  No one even stops to think i am a human, i'm a complex biochemical machine.  A marvel of nature... now im marginalized as just a name and picture on facebook.  I'm marginalized by my government as just a social security number in a computer.  That my life experiences are marginal, and the only life experiences that have value surround materialism.

I'm simply in a constant state of suffering with intervals of false happiness perpetuated by this idea that i will be happy if i keep consuming all this shit i don't actually need.  What i need is a loving relationship with family and friends.  People who care about me because of me... the same way i care about people because of who they are,  Fellow man.

I find western culture to be a bunch of arrogant assholes who claim they are so smart and innovative, yet destroy our home (nature) so they can have a bunch of toys they play with for a couple months and throw away, and ends up god knows where.  Maybe washed up on the shores of far away beaches so we can turn a blind eye to the problem at hand.  That our western culture is a cancer on not only humanity but to the entire world ecosystem.

I just wish people could take time away from their mindless 9-5 jobs and actually do something meaningful with their lives.  Explore questions for them selves instead of relying on other people to know it for them.  The more technology increases and people can do what they want instantly... the more i realize the true nature of my "friends" and "family."  Deep down they really don't give a shit about me, i'm just there to keep them company.  These are just my family and friends... let alone the general public, i'm just a consumer to possibly something to make money from to them.  Nothing more.  It's pathetic... and everyone is sitting by and watching it like "everything is okay."  Well everything is not okay.  We are selfish pieces of shit and nothing to be proud of.  There is this cultural notion of self congratulation that we can do this and do that... but we can't even do the most basic human desires... To actually care about people because they are apart of your community, and whats better for community is better for you.  But in this competitive capitalistic society where everyone is a competitor or a potential business partner, we no longer become what we are.  Gregarious primates sharing a life experience based on this giant mystery of the very nature of our biological being and the life around us.

We figure that fucking everything else over and not exercise, become obese, diabetes and heart disease with the most important part of the day as watching some television show that fills our minds with big steamy piles of shit... and IT'S OKAY!

It boggles my mind people don't even think twice about what they do, and figure "it's okay, it will all work out in the end."  Well guess what the end looks pretty fucking shitty... and it's too late to do anything about it.

The way I see it is you have no choice but to follow your current train of thought.  No amount of "good" advice is going to change things.  This is your life and nature created it along with a zillion other variations with no likely goal in mind. This is just your draw of the cards and you'll have to decide what to do with it.  I got a similar draw and I'm making what I can of it.  I've ceased to try and "fix" my life in any major way or understand why me.  That is a major relief right there. But the rest is just getting on with it and knowing I'm just somewhere in the soup along with everything else.  The ultimate death anxiety won't go away.  I'm just learning to live with it. :haha:

'Secondly non-depressed people live in this "everything is hunky dory" delusion

Not everything is how it seems man don't assume because someone plays hunky dory everything is alright , you ever heard of the sad clown?

Why are Hunky Dory's bothering you so much ?

'delusion' does not necessarily grant stability or peace,  Hunky Dory's will be eating the stick 10 times harder then you when shit hits the fan , the realization that you are already depressed and cannot go any lower may bring you an unexpected laugh or smile.

Denied to acknowledge our dark nature from youth, kids are vulnerable and taught to repress emotion (because its weak) therefore Hunky Dory is not to blame so just forget them, just forget blame in general and focus on your dark-side maybe its trying to tell you something or perhaps its been told and your still mulling its acceptance ?

For example getting used to the superficiality and how people use each other for their own self gain , its a positive thing because once you stop expecting it to be different then how it is, you can decide how to spend you energy in a different manner

i like this thread. cool posts rahz n ped n cognitive.

cog your view is a bit skewed and totalizing imo. what would this imagined 'non consumer' look like in a consumer society? how hard have you looked? how well would you have to know them?..

imo these people do exist but are usually the ones with their mouths shut.
