south FL hunt and unknown psilocybe
    #17468035 -

hello,
I went for a quick hunt this afternoon and found a few cubes, cyans, anddddddddd something in between :awesanta:

1.) Weird mutant ant and some pan paps

2.)

3.) Amanitas

4.) cube (found a few but this was the largest one)

5.) cyans (found a lot more but didn't snap pics)

6.) psilocybes unknown to me...

they were growing within feet of cubensis (cubes w/ intact veils)... I also found a few different clusters of them with hundreds of feet in between

I've found older, unhealthy specimens before, but everyone said they were cubes... I disagree.

so yeah... between the mutant ant and the weird psilocybes... it was a weird hunt

got 20 or so cyans printing... hmu if you would like a print.

cheers:sunny::cool::thumbup:

Cool finds! Your last ones are whacky Panaeolus cyanescens.

:awwhellno:  did you print your suspected Psilocybe?? Gills are crazy looking, but almost seems like it wants to drop a Panaeolus-like black print. The gills even seem a tiny bit mottled; would you agree?

Gah! Beaten to it :awesomenod: Did you get that heavy rain the past day or two? I have had mushrooms take on that sombrero look after getting bombarded with rain.

3.) amanita

4.) the big cube print

5.) cyan print galore

6.) weird psilocybe (possibly cyan?)
the dark print in the corner is a cyan (for comparison) and the last picture is so you guys can see the size/color/gill differences.

I'm still drying the cyan caps and 3 of the weird psilocybe caps... but everything else is in the desiccant chamber or already vacuum-sealed and in the fridge.

:pm: me if you would like a cyan print. I'm already sending the dried cyan-like specimens and their prints to a friend so he can further identify them...

maybe they're cyans, but what if they aren't? :strokebeard:

Tell you friend to use the key on page 19 of the Gerhardt Panaeolus monograph.

He needs to measure spore size, check if the basidia are 2 or 4 spored, and check the shape and color of the metuloids.

They are not Psilocybe because they dropped a black spore print. They are almost certainly Panaeolus.

I think they are Panaeolus cyanescens. As Alan suggested, However, Microscopy is necessary to differentiate Panaeolus bisporus.

Can you provide a link, Alan?
the person scoping them is an experienced and well-respected shroomery member... I'm sure he has everything he needs.
thanks for your input, all.

I haven't read that monograph in a while, but I recall conflicting observations. Some collections bruised strongly and some did not.

Panaeolus.

spores = 11.9 x 9.1 (a little on the small side for Panaeolus cyanescens)

11.2 x 9.3
11.3 x 9.3
11.3 x 7.5
11.1 x 8.9
12.8 x 8.7
11.3 x 8.8
13.7 x 10.0
12.3 x 9.6
11.7 x 9.2
12.2 x 9.4

oil

basidia (appears to be both 2 and 4 spored)

cystidia oil

Who knows. How many bluing Panaeolus actually get scoped?  There may well be several species hiding behind the epithet "cyanescens". All of the names and descriptions we use for Panaeolus come from European studies done on European fungi.
