Monstrose/Crested Cacti Questions
    #17331460 -

I've recently fallen in love with Monstrose and Crested variations of cacti!
They're just beautiful!
However, I had two questions:
Do these var. randomly form form? or are they messed around with (read somewhere about making a crested cacti with a needle?) to be created?
Also,
If one of these var. flowers &/ produces seeds, do those seed grow that particular var. or will they grow a normal version?
Thanks heaps!!

I don't know if these would be specific var.

I myself have a monsterform pach that started putting out crested forms.
If i would cut these off and root them they would grow furhter as a crest. This makes me wonder if the other pach crests are seedgrown or actually cuttings from monstruoses that started cresting.

Monstruose or crested cacti form randomly and are verry special in nature and not common.

but iff you buy them in stores they are most likely well rooted cuttings from an motherplant.

iff you had seeds from a monstrouse or crested  plant they will grow normall so iff you had seeds from a trich panchanoi crest you will get a culluminaire cactus instead of a crest. Althought The change of reproducing a crest is maybe bigger but i can't say that for sure.

Monstrose and Crested is not believed to be a genetic feature. The seeds from these cacti may or may not become crested/monstrose but commonly do not for the most part.

There are a few links and different 'ways to make' crested/monstrose cacti. However they are not exact or always successful.

I am currently experimenting with a small amount of seedlings with freezing conditions causing mutations. I'll report any outcomes if I have any survivors.

awesome! thank guys!

So really it's just experimenting to find the right circumstances that'll make/cause the mutations?

Also, @modern.shaman I'm very tempted to sacrifice one of my seedlings to try this needle tech. Do you think it'd be worth it?

I'm too poor to buy a cutting atm  and please do tell how the experiment goes! hopefully it's successful!

A guy on there is selling his Trichocereus Peruvianus Monstrose x SS02 Crest cutting from a plant, says:

I think nearly every seed from the original cross produced a crest or at very least a mutant. All of mine (6 seeds) are cresting nicely.

I asked what conditions he had them in, so just waiting for a reply!

It is very likely that those are simply the genetics of the cacti parents... like plant-paradise mentioned the likelihood of it occurring seems larger but is not guaranteed. Some species do not however carry these genetics over to the seeds and may just be an environmental factor. http://www.cactus-art.biz/note-book/Dictionary/Dictionary_C/dictionary_cristation.htm

The truth is that no one really knows what makes a plant crested or monstrose. You cannot use simple inheritance patterns to make assumptions like that when talking about organisms with genetics as complex as plants and features that may ride on a very minor mutations.
