some new papers on Trichocereeae [pdf's]
    #17277427 -

Some interesting conclusions drawn in these.

Quote:
The simultaneous phylogenetic analysis of both morphological data and noncoding
DNA sequence data recovered Trichocereus as monophyletic if two species of Harrisia are part of it.

Cladistic Analysis Of Trichocereus (Cactaceae: Cactoideae: Trichocereeae) Based On Morphological DATA And Chloroplast Dna Sequences

_____________________________

Quote:
As a result of comparing the original description
with the presently known Trichocereus species, we
conclude that C. macrogonus Salm-Dyck is the same
species known as T. peruvianus, and that it is conspecific
with T. pachanoi but differentiable at a lower
(infraspecific) level.

Identity And Neotypification Of Cereus Macrogonus, The Type Species Of The Genus Trichocereus (Cactaceae)

_____________________________

Quote:
The chloroplast DNA phylogeny presented
here for 144 species and subspecies representing all major
groups of Echinopsis sensu lato as well as all genera of Trichocereeae
demonstrates the polyphyly of this genus as currently circumscribed.
..
A new generic
classifi cation of the Trichocereeae now requires finding morphological
characters sufficiently conservative for distinguishing
larger groups of species. Seed morphology and growth
form, perhaps in combination, seem promising starting points.

What do these studies mean for those of us who eat or grow cactus?  Please translate for the reading impaired.

Don't PM me with bullshit.  I don't sell or trade cactus and I don't know where you can get any, other than your mother's ass.

Not a great deal!

My trich labels shall remain as such.

Echinopsis sensu lato is quite a large group and maybe more splitting will be seen, undoing the previous lumping that led Trichocereus to be renamed Echinopsis.

Nice to see some sequencing results. It's something I wish I had access to as it's really the only way forward considering the cluster fuck that is Trichocereus/Echinopsis.
