Dehydrated Cow Manure?
    #1727709 -

they have this shit in 40 pound bags at the garden place... would it be good to use? it seems like cow manure would be a little sloppy. should i bulk it up with some straw if i use it?

yes you can use cow manure and it's not too sloppy to handle but just remember that you have to presure cook it before you use it.alot of peple find they get the best resluts for mushrooms when the use straw for the subtrate and then case it with manure after the straw is 100% colonized.so in a few words use both if you can for the best results.

hahaha yes and yes

infact that is how pretty much all mushroom kits are sold over the net with straw for the substrate and manure for the casing and like I said the reason for this is becasue you get good yeilds.I serilize everything inc. myself you can never be too steril when it come to growing mushrooms

Pasteurize your manure and use it as a substrate, not a casing. A casing layer should be non-nutritive.

Yeah I know a textbook casing layer is non-nutritive and is to:

1.protect the colonized substrate from drying out
2.to provide huidity for pin formation and development
3.to prvide a water reservior for maturing mushrooms.
4.to support the growth of fructifiation

and not all mushrooms need to be cased

but like I was saying when I frist started out I brought a mushroom kit and it came with spawn(colonized cakes in a ziplock bag),pillow sack of straw, manure, grow chamber, spray bottle,

now what they have you do is take the pillowcase with the straw in it and boil it and then cool to room temp then mix the spawn(mycelium) with the straw then then incubate till it is 100% colonized then take the manure that is prestrilized and add water to it then add it to the straw then incubate again till that is 100% colonized then start to fruit.

the way I see it is that "if it's not broke don't fix it"

now these kits are not textbook casing but they do everything that casing dose + give it extra nutrients.I found that I got bigger mushrooms and more flushes by doing it this way then I did with textbook casing so I guess what ever works for you do it,and I do PC my manure and I never once had a problem with it.So I guess i'm say that I started off with these kits and I liked the results I got from them when I tried non-nutritive casing I got good results too but not as good.

It may work but if your gonna try it mix in 50/50 verm and peatmoss. Also add in some straw... Dung really needs to be lightened up so it colonizes quickly and completly~

im using the same shit u are.....
its my 1st bulk grow....
i used about 6 qts of shit and 1 qt of verm, put it in a mycobag, and pressurecooked fer 90min at 15psi.....
then dumped a Qt of colonized grain in there (in a glovebox)
then sealed with packing tape....

the poo was exacly like rich dirt, it didnt smell like shit at all, even when wet......

i think that was a week ago.... its about 90% colonized on the outside......
i figure ill leave it for a week after i see 100% colonization... then break chunks off and case em.....
