Store bought cow manure? 1

Is it correct to assume that all store bought cow manure (such as that bought from Home Depot) contains anti-fungicides, even if not listed on the bag? Is it worthwhile to even try to use these products?

It's worthwhile to try, some people have had success with store bought manure (though minimal).
Fungicides harm spores, not mycelium. You won't be directly inoculating your bags with spores anyways, so the fungicide is not an issue.

Just get organic cow manure. It should say, or ask an employee if the poo is treated with anything. I don't know who Diver's been talking to, but store bought poo works just fine. You just need to add straw and/or vermiculite to give it a bit of spongey texture so the mycelium will eat through it more easily.

I like to mix store bought composted cow manure, coir, coffee grinds, and worm castings all together, then add 1/2 tablespoon of hydrated lime per cup of mix. Then, mix all that with an equal amount of damp vermiculite. Bring it all to field consistency and pasteurize. It works like a charm.

Can either of you verify that the growth is in fact coming from the store bought manure itself, and not the extra bulk additives that you're using? RR in your case: remove worm castings, coffee grounds and coir, do you think it would still colonize?
If the solution for a nice bulk substrate lies in $0.99 bags of store bought manure, we wouldn't be searching for horse turds in pastures.

My first use of poo was a 40lb. bag of cow manure bought at the hardware shop. I got some straw, cut that up into short pieces. Pasteurized the mix of straw and poo with lime (like RR's straw tek), drained it, added some vermiculite (it was too wet) and then spawned grain to this. Worked very nicely. I think the reason people go for horse poo is that it has that fibrous character that cow poo doesn't. But both are very high in nutrients. So it really shouldn't matter too much if you use cow poo and mix it a bit with straw/verm. Especially for those of us that don't have access to horse poo.

A friend of mine bought a bag of Composted Steer Manure from the Home Depot, made a PF style cake with it (quarter cup manure, quarter cup water, half cup vermiculite), sterilized, and inoculated with a spore syringe, and it colonized in two weeks. It beat the coffee ground PF cake by about 2 hours (yes, he claims he was watching).
Anno (I think) made a comment that steer manure was high in salts, so he soaked and drained the manure before he made the jar with it. It is currently cased and in his fruiting chamber.
It was the first jar in that batch to fully colonize, followed closely by his experimental jars of coffee grounds, and quinoa flour.

I think it comes down to the source. I once found some fantastic bagged manure, and two months later, the same source sucked.
If you find a place that produces consistent batches of compost that are conducive to mycelial growth, then awesome!
But if you find straight-from-the-horses-ass manure, it will, IDE, always work.

I just started my first experiments with poo about 2 weeks ago. I got it at Wal-Mart. As I was using it, guess what I found? a wild mushroom in the bag lol. I took it as a good sign.

after reflection, i think my strait poo bulk failed simply because the myc got suffocated, there weren't any paths for the myc to take and spread out. at first there was some small spots of growth on the surface layer but after weeks nothing happened. the myc looked fine, it just wasn't spreading. i'm thinking i'll give it another go but add a bunch of straw to give the myc colonizing passages.

My experimental endevours are usually succesfull, but every brand of compost and manure needed nutes added for growth. Blak cow resists contams unwashed and unsterilized like a mofo, but it barely colinizes the smallest of sections. (again, until nutes are added) everything else has been just crap results.

Most cow manure sold in bags - comes from feed lots. At feed lots - they feed steers a lot of excess salt, so they hold water weight. that salt is excreted in both the manure & urine.
They also spray the manure with insecticides (to keep the flies & bugs down)& fungicides to keep down fungus on the manure.
Bagged manure is NOT COMPOSTED. It is not turned & simply left to dry & ROT.
In other words, it seldom preforms well. Proof of that is if it did perform - well. You would not see vendors selling h/poo, compost & other substrates for fairly high dollar prices.
No one would buy it - if $0.99 cent to $1.99 Lowes, HomeDepot, KMart 50 pound bullshit manure bags worked - worth a darn.

Here guys--is this all right? Worked fine for me. If you've got an ACE hardware nearyby, they sell this in 40lb. bags. And "Mushroom Compost" and I believe peat. Anyway, this stuff did okay for me:

Mushroom compost won't work either. Anyways, I'll believe store bought manure works when I see it colonizing alone. That means, without all these nutritional modifiers everyone keeps mentioning. Minus straw, worms castings, coir, etc.

Wouldn't that depend on what you were growing? I have read that Ps. subbalteatus likes to grow in compost that has been picked over by other mushrooms.
For your test, would it be acceptable to add vermiculite or would you consider that a nutritional modifier? I think your request is not unreasonable, and I am certainly game, I just want to be sure of the parameters.

I agree, but, I say, it, is, out there. If you get lucky!
When I first started with bulk, I thought I would be able to find good bagged manure, but it is like searching for gold. Almost always is crap, very disappointing seeing jar after jar of good spawn, and pillowcase after pillocase of "compost" go to waste.
But then I found some.
It colonized like what I read about in the books! I finally had bulk success.
Then, the next visit to the store produced bags that were horrible.
Go get horse poo, it is definitely better!! So much more predictable!

I think the results from straight bagged manure would be pretty poor. I use it in a mix and it works well. Those who live in rural areas with access to horses or real cows can get the real thing which is obviously superior. For those of us in the concrete jungle, the bagged up stuff makes a bit more sense. At the very least, cut it 50% with vermiculite. Save your coffee grinds and toss them in. Coir is good mixed into the substrate, but it's really too expensive to be worthwhile unless you have someplace other than pet stores to get it.

AFOAF made his first tennessee stud manure/spawn mix... Unincubated, it colonizes like it would grain - Just by itself with minimal moistture content.
Less than 12 hours showed incredible growth.
$15 for 5 pounds dry, making 15 pounds wet.
Home depot or lowes - 99c usually.
You get what you pay for, period.
Also the above home depot poo cake looks like an average pf cake, no offense.
