I'm really new to mushroom hunting, but it just rained here and theres a couple of patches of them in my neighborhood. I know you can't really do anything without a picture, but i don't have a digital camera or scanner (getting one soon).

I'm in Toronto Ontario, Scarborough.
I found these the day after a heavy rain, growing in the dirt on someones lawn. There were about 10-20 of them, grey, most with black around the edges and black cuts in them. They are about 1-1.5 inches across, the caps are about .5 inches tall and the stems are short and not very thin, but not thick.

I know this doesn't help much. I've been through all the FAQs but it is hard to find anything on my area. Tell me if you need any other info.

I think whole9 is probably on the right track.

Those sound like Coprinus. If you keep track over the next day or two they should turn into black goo.

Happy mushrooming!

Are they edible?

A number of Coprinus species are edible. You need to get to them before the gills change color from white.

From your description, the most likely species is Coprinus micaceus. Both photos are of the same species. Your description sounds like they're already about as far gone as the ones in the first photo. The second photo shows what they should look like if you're going to eat them.

An important feature for identification of this species is the tiny, mica-like particles on the cap (visible in th esecond photo).

In my opinion, the best species in the genus is Coprinus comatus. These are often found in parks. When you see a big fruiting, you can easily fill a bushel basket.

As with all Coprinus species, you want to eat them while the gills are white. Once they start to change color they're nasty. The only way to stop them from starting to go bad is to cook them.

If you find some, post photos so we can see.

Also, as with any mushrooms, be certain of your ID before you eat any.

Happy mushrooming!
