I've been a lurker on the shroomery for years and always loved PS&P. It gave me a good source of of food for thought and actually let me believe that the world isn't full of jackasses and idiots. It's good shit. But over time I think it has gone downhill a little and I really want to change that. Before I could get on at anytime and find an epiphany waiting for me but now I have to wade through dozens of garbage posts to find even one that's decent.

Honestly my main gripes right now are OrgoneConclusion and Icelander. Like I said I've been here for a while and I know you guys are smart but do you HAVE to derail every topic or make a couple dozen topics a day, most of which are just trolling anyway? I mean come on

And Orgone just made a topic admitting that trolling isn't as fun as it used to be.

But they're not the only ones. There's a crap load of people who do the same thing. What am I asking is am I the only one who wants to leave most of this stuff in the Pub and minimize it here where I'd actually like a serious conversation on the internet?

The thing is we've debated so many topics countless times, and a lot of us who frequent here agree on similar conclusions.

Things like Free will, the existence of God, Life after death, death anxiety, etc. etc. have been debated numerous times that it's gotten tedious to rehash the same arguments every time a noob comes in with wild proclamations. If you have a good topic, then post it, instead of posting this boring rant. If you can't think of a topic, then leave. :shrug:

Yeah I don't think I've ever seen anything worthwhile written by OrgoneConclusion.  Icelander is alright though.  At least his posts are funny and generally on topic.  He's always struck me as someone who's just had all these conversations before, probably many times.  This forum is full of cyclically recurring topics created by breathless ignorant youngins who think they are the first ones to make some deep connection or other.  I'm sure we'd all have trouble replying seriously after 7 years of it.

What makes you think a discussion isn't serious if someone is not participating the way you want them to?

Perhaps it is you who is not taking the discussion seriously enough, since you've perhaps not thought your ideas out enough yourself before offering them up for public discourse.

Also, seriousness is not a requirement of argument. Laughing at someone can be a philosophical statement as much as a 20-page manifesto on the course of human events.

It matters to me because I love intellectual discussions and this site. Its not like I hate it. If I did I would have left. And just because no good topics are coming in does that give you the right to shoot down and derail the noobs whodo want to go over them? It just may be scaring possible good posters. It's stinting PS&P from coming up with anything new

Please, stop trying to own the terms "intellectual" and "serious."

Just because someone isn't behaving the way you want them to does not indicate their lack of usefulness to this forum.

Perhaps you could use a "serious" "intellectual" look at yourself. There's nothing here anyone can say to you that you can't think of yourself.

I suggest that if you really think you have a case, argue it in another thread where you see the banter happen. Out argue it, if you can. Otherwise, this sort of open letter stuff just reads like sour grapes, and does nothing to specifically address anything you are complaining about.
