Finally, with an ID confirmation I can call this my third active in Monterey Bay

ID guide: All That the Rain Promisis, and More... (David Arora) / Shroomery gym thread.

Suspected: Gymnopilus ventricosus, spectabilis or junonius (All That...)

Cap diameter:
10", small specimines 3"

stalk:
1-2" diameter, orange and yellow where not exposed to sunlight or spores, Not sticky/slimey  No scales.

Veil:
partial decomposed veil suspected from spore clustering along the stem.  Can be seen in stem close up.

Taste:
mild bitter, about 1/5 as prevalent as kava root in tea form

Spores: Rusty and orange, NOT white.  Doing a legit spore print at the moment, but you can see spores present on other caps and covering the base of the pine tree.

Bruising:
Immediate bruising dark brown, but bluing/greening on all caps where the bald cap started breaking up to form small scales, tiny bits and streaks on the tip of all stress points, prevalent in the center of the cap.  We had rain 48 hours ago and I suspect that these gyms were already developed and that the bluing present on the cap is from the rain batter

Gills:

Stem:

Cap:

I have a spore print going from one cap, four in the dehydrator and the stem from the printed mushroom are getting beat up and abused to check for bluing in the morning.

If you need any more information to narrow down the specific ID, ask.  I plan on going back to the patch tomorrow with a digital camera(if I can find it, its been in the closet since my last cyan dec 2011)

dam right make up for last year.

Tasting tomorrow night.  If it is 35g dried per dose, tea from 10g dried should take me up there without going out there.  I usually test drive my patches before distribution with low doses so I can still function at school and work.  Would the 10g dried be advisable for that or more/ less?

My guess is Gymnopilus ventricosus.  The green in your pic looks like mold.  I have never seen a bluing/greening ventricosus/junonius on the west coast and I am not sure that we have them here.

Compare to G. parvisquamulosus. The blackening squamules at the disc and appressed brown fibrils at the margin are pretty unique.

What about my collection Alan. It was active and I did a pretty thorough microscopy.

Although I agree that does look a bit like mold or discoloration rather than bruising.

Preparing 13g dried in tea now to check for activity.  My other assumption concerning bluing is it is pollen buildup on cap.
tasted bitterness in cap so it is an "ava-oid". Worst case I'll have a kava day.  O well, those are fantastic in their own right.

If it is another west coast active I will gladly have a specimine on me at the upcoming SC fungus fest.

PS, these were found in Monterey CA at elevation 800', between Monterey and Pebble Beach on a NW facing slope. Patch was on the cusp of tree density between open pine and dense pine oak.  Found porcinis under same tree Feb 2012.

Definitely fun.  Got the body high going but that is more than likely the Ava.  Going to prepare more and go to 25g by the end of the night.  Should clarify what the trip is from. (tripping on tripping possible at this point)
