ID Confirm: A Cute Coral
    #2976907 - 08/07/04 10:43 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

Here are a few pictures of a cute coral fungus I found growing near some dead logs in the forest in Rhode Island, USA.  The clusters are about 2 inches tall.  I'm trying to get a spore print, and I also attempted a tissue culture (difficult).  My tentative diagnosis is the crown-tipped coral,  Clavicorona pyxidata .  Anyone have other thoughts, or a confirmation? My guide lists this species as edible.  Has anyone had any gustatory experience with coral mushrooms?  My book describes the tate as "peppery..."  This is the same guide that said Dryad's saddle was edible, too. (yuk!)

I think you got the ID right, but I wouldn't eat them if I were you. I tryed them a few years ago and they don't taste very good. I think the watermellon rind flavored Dryad's saddle tastes better. They are neat looking mushrooms though.
