The coolest class I've ever taken. Bar none. It's just one :mindblown: after another. I mean, I knew it was going to be a cool class, like a really cool class going into it, but I simply could not have predicted how ridiculously fun this stuff is. I've basically sacrificed my social life this semester to study for this class, and it is repaying me in full.

The first half of the semester was all description of molecules while the lab was about basic techniques. Interesting, but not that cool. But now we're getting to the reaction mechanisms. It's like playing some outlandish cosmic puzzle. The rules sound like they're made up, but in fact they're not, it's Real Shit, it's manipulation of the building blocks of life on the most fundamental possible level. And this is only the beginning-- the rest of the course is just progressively more complex reaction mechanisms working on progressively more complex molecules.

Fucking HELL yeah. This reminds me of when I would get all excited about a progressively challenging video game as a kid before I got sick of video games. But this time, it's foreal. :macdre:

Mellowparty, I can see why you get such a kick out of this stuff.

What sucks is I'm enjoying it so much that it's enabling me to procrastinate on studying for the biology exam... :picard:

Chemistry, biology, physics; Nearly any science, or math, are just fucking amazing.
I wish more people would just take the time to get past the boring introductions, deal with the basics, so they actually know how fucking cool it is.
Mellow's unique interest in the sciences, is actually what sparked my curiosity. Glad to see someone else showing some interest. Remember though, biology is cool too. Don't spend all your time on organic chemistry. You got an exam.

What are you going to school for by the way?

I'm aiming to do brain research, so currently seeking a bachelor's in neuroscience. I'm probably going to transfer to UC Santa Cruz or, if I can keep my shit together and the stars line up just right, UCLA. Sometime next year or the one after-- I have to take two courses in basic physics before I can transfer, and I'm still working on the calculus.

I had fun with GenChem, the first half at least. It got to be pretty mind-numbing by the end, but I'm so glad I got through it and am now qualified to do this insane wizardry I'm learning now. :aweoverdose:

And yeah, I kind of fell behind on the bio studying while staying ahead of ochem, because it's all pretty straightforward... but getting ready for this test I see that while it is straightforward, it's horribly dense. I need to spend a good amount of time just memorizing features of plant anatomy and the cladistics of protists. :zomgwtf:

That was pretty cool, actually. We sublimated it and then crystallized it on a cold finger. :awehigh:

I only ended up with 3mg, a useless amount. I need AT LEAST 120mg to really feel it. :snub:

The question of how the brain creates consciousness has nagged at me my entire life, so that's what I'm aiming for. I'm really curious about the actual physics of how chemical reactions and electric impulses can create the holographic reality we all experience.

I doubt it's a question that can be answered in my lifetime, but isn't that, like, the point of science? :kingtard:

So yeah, my actual goals are still pretty vague. I figure I'll have a better idea of what I want to research specifically once I learn more. I'm thinking I need to get on top of finding internships and such. I think it'll be a lot easier to find good ones now that I'm getting the ochem on my belt.

Yeah, i thought about going into that feild as well. For similar reasons.
Honestly, i can't wait to get into research, and studies of my own.
I plan on trying to figure out what energy really is, likewise though, probably wont be able to find that equation in my lifetime.
It just baffles me that we use energy in science, yet we have no idea what it really is. No real explanation. It just is.

well if you can't wait, i suggest going to bars where they have "ladies nights" and get some girl all wasted and shit and bring her home, then lock her in your basement and perform all sorts of experiments on her brain.

Up until I decided to go to school for big kids, I did research on my own brain using exploratory tracer compounds. :awecid:

It's those really impossible questions that fuel the flame, huh? Diving down the rabbit hole has never been so fun or productive.
