Problems with magnetic stirrer

Iv constructed a simple magnetic stirrer but im having major problems with the 'magnetic' part. I didnt dismantle a hard drive so i dont have a magnet from the hard drive. First off i bought self adhesive magnetic tape which didnt work, then i tryed craft magnets from ebay which didnt work and now iv tryed 'VERY STRONG' craft magnets from ebay which also dont work. I tryed using a nail in a jar the first time and then a metal paper clip but the both arent being attracted enough to spin.
How strong is a hard drive magnet!?

Hard drive magnets kick ass for their size.

these strong magnets do make the paper clip spin initially when the fan spins slow but when it builds speed it has no effect

I found the weight of the stirrer affects the speed of the fan.user a 16d nail and cut it down to an inch. I tried using paper clips with no luck
