Never used one. But from Agar's picture, the vox. is way longer/deeper.
What kind of stirrers are you using? Standard stuff?
BTW, congrats. on the new toy ...How much was it?

It has 10 setting's, just not sure which one to use it at. At the highest setting , it will send a funnel all the way to the bottom of the jar.
They're not normally that cheap. I saw a multi stirrer that wasn't tested go for $103, not even guaranteed to work. AS IS sale. I just got lucky

Yes . You have to use something magnetic as a stir bar . I ordered some teflon coated magnet stir bars to go with it.

Excellent HC! A magnetic stirrer is a must have for liquid cultures. As far as the speed is concerned, a full vortex is best to break up the mycelia network as small as possible.

Nice find.
From what I'm reading, if I'm going to do LC it's definitely a good find. The (infamous) MIT flea market is back in action for 2006 and I wouldn't be surprised if I find one there.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to say it's a must have for anyone who is serious about doing liquid cultures? I just don't want to start hearing all the newbies thinking they have to spend a bunch of money on magnetic stirrers along with everything else.

Fast speeds that make a visible vortex are neither required nor will speed up the colonization. In Paul Stamet's book Growing Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms (page 149) he recommends only 100 to 200 RPM, and that would not be fast enough to induce a vortex except maybe a small dimple in the surface. It certainly wouldn't look anything like the pictures above.
I like to run mine slow at first, especially with spores, so that the liquid just turns and shows no vortex at all. Once the mycelium globs start to form, I turn it up a little so that the magnet can shear the large blobs. At those speeds, I only see a little dip on the surface, not a vortex. Here is a picture showing what it looks like (note the dimple on the surface):

I only turn the speed high enough for a vortex if the mycelium is sticking to the walls, magnet, or surfaces to dislodge them, then I turn it back down after a minute or two.
Having said all of that, I have run a LC with a vortex nearly half way down the liquid the entire time and was just fine. If you do run fast enough to make a big vortex like in those pictures above, just keep in mind that the more motion you invoke, the more heat will be generated by the movement. And potentially even worse, some units run hotter on the plate itself when the RPMs are increased which will heat up the liquid even more, so always keep the temperature of the LC in check when you run fast. The rule is that no matter what speed, you don't want the LC over the mid 80s for cubensis because as the temperature rises, the mycelium slows down and the bacteria, if any, will have the upper hand.

Hc - I was told not to substitute Malto Dextrin for Dextrose??!? Dextrose, commonly called glucose, d-glucose, or blood sugar, occurs naturally in food, and is moderately sweet. It is a monosaccharide (basic unit of carbohydrates, C6H1206) and has a high glycemic index (digested carbohydrates ability to raise blood glucose levels, also called Gl) ranking at 100.
Maltodextrin is a sweat, easily digested carbohydrate made from cornstarch. The starch is cooked, and then acid and/or enzymes (a process similar to that used by the body to digest carbohydrates) are used to break the starch into smaller chains (3-20 chains in maltodextrin). These chains are composed of several dextrose molecules held together by very weak hydrogen bonds.
To clarify, carbohydrates are molecules of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen produced by plants through photosynthesis. The term saccharide is a synonym for carbohydrate; a monosaccharide (mono=1) is the fundamental unit of carbohydrates. Disaccharides (Di=2) are molecules containing 2 monosaccharide units. Di and monosaccharides are also known as sugars, simple sugars, or simple carbohydrates. Next are oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. Oligosaccharides are made of 3-9 monosaccharide links. Polysaccharides consist of 10 to thousands of monosaccharide links. A complex carbohydrate refers to many monosaccharide units linked together. In addition, you will often hear the terms ?long?, and ?short? carbohydrate chains. Short carbohydrate chains are those under 10 sugar molecules. And long chains are those over 10 sugar molecules. Which fits in conjunction with the above terms, Oligosaccharides and Polysaccharides.
Dextrose is labeled a simple carbohydrate and Maltodextrin complex. And now this should make perfect sense. But don?t be fooled by the word, ?complex.? The bonds that compose maltodextrin are very weak, and readily broken apart in your stomach; moreover, the chain is extremely minimal in composition. The weak bonds, and fragile composition of maltodextrin cause it to be digested a fraction slower than dextrose. Why this is so and what exactly hydrogen bonds are will be assessed subsequently.
have you sucessfully made a LC with it?

Indeed. This video shows my stirrer at 120 1/min.
The jar on the right is placed where it is supposed to be placed, the other 2 jars are placed offsite, but still stirring. This makes it possible to place 9 jars on it!
