You can keep them away with lots of DEET.  You don't apply the DEET like you normally do for mosquitoes, you put it around your shoes, legs, socks, waist and neck, any opening in the clothing.

They like low elevation areas.  In Mexico they disappear above 1400 meters.

you do have to eat the flea. I have spit one out into a sink before though, when I had a bunch of kittens that I couldn't medicate. I was bathing them with dawn and i guess one jumped right in my mouth. When i picked it up on the tip of my finger I kinda freaked out.. but not every flea carries a tapeworm- even if the cats are infected.

I guess they could have been chiggers. I hate them.

Yes they are the worst biting insect.  I went to the coast in Veracruz a couple months ago and found some pan cyans and at least 200 chiggers.  I still have marks all over me, though they stopped itching after about 3 weeks.

Every time I hunt in low elevation areas I put DEET all over my legs and waist and have only gotten 1 or 2 at a time instead of hundreds.

Hmm it appears to be menthol and zinc oxide.


Appears as though altoids and sunscreen would do the same thing?

My wife works in a hospital and some guy came into the emergency room because his nervous system was shunting down, the reason... he sprayed an entire bottle of bug spray on himself and the active ingredient was DEET. They had to life-flight him to OHSU which is the main medical college in Oregon, before they took him to Portland he was dying. She is not sure whatever happened to him, when they transfer patients to other hospitals they don't relay back to the first hospital what happened to the transferee. Morel of the story, DEET can kill you. Make sure you spray yourself outside or in an area with lots of fresh air, don't be stupid about, it is poison. Keep it away from your face and if you start to feel sick, disoriented or confused seek medical attention right away.

I remember someone (I think BlimeyGrimey) recommending permethrin if DEET deters you. Chiggers suck though, you don't even know they're biting you until it's far too late. I used to put fingernail polish on them 'cause I was told they burrow in but Wikipedia educated me otherwise. I do know it does help stop that damned itching sooner than wihout though.

i suppose...maybe.
Calmoseptine will dry em' out and rid the itching in a couple days. :thumbup:

Chiggers are terrible.

There are times, however, right after the baby ticks hatch when they are all concentrated in one area. I have come home to find a couple dozen slowly crawling up my legs. I once had to removed over thirty that had already attached themselves to my leg, balls, abdomen, chest, back, shoulder, arms and scalp.

This is what I like to do to ticks:
