Well, its not going to absorb through your skin, but i would definatly avoid touching your eyes, face, mouth, or food after handeling unknown mushrooms until your hands have been washed. just to be on the safe side.

Yes. The poisons of certain Amanitas (death caps, destroying angels etc) can be absorbed through the skin. People have even had the skin on their fingers rot (necrosis) from handling death caps.

Death caps are an all white color. Most common easiest trait to spot on a mushroom whether it's an amanita or not is if the base has a vulva, sort of like a big ball with the mushroom popping out on one side. Look at some amanita pictures to get used to seeing how they look.

Here's a good pictures showing the vulva at the bottom:

Please cite a reference. I am unaware of a single case anywhere of this happening.

The only cases of problems with handling mushrooms I know of are cases of contact dermatitis. In particular some of the slimier species of Suillus cause rashes from the slime. There has also been a case I know of where a person reporting burning sensations after handling Omphalotus (Jack O'Lantern) mushrooms.

There has never been a case of a fatality from a person only handling mushrooms.

I have personally handled more deadly mushrooms than I'd care to attempt to count with no visible effects.

There have also been some interesting cases where people inhaled large quantities of mushroom spores. This happens sometimes in workers at mushroom cultivation facilities and usually results in allergic reactions.

Common sense suggests that it is a good idea to wash your hands after handling *any* mushrooms (poisonous or not), but the biggest danger you're eliminating is the various bacteria that may have gotten on your hands.

To be poisoned by a mushroom the toxins have to get into your body. Your skin is a great barrier to that. Poisonings happen most often when somebody eats a poisonous mushroom. Other cases have happened - I know of a case where some guys tried boiling psychedelic mushrooms to make a tea, concentrated it, then shot it up. They were lucky they didn't die. Your digestive system destroys and rejects lots of toxins in what you eat, so it also protects you from lots of poisoning.

Happy mushrooming!

I just wanted to say, that I've touched Death Caps quiet often (to see if it actually was one) and nothing ever happened. Most -if not any- of the cases where people had problems after touching poisonous mushrooms are most likely related to some kind of allergy. Normally nothing happens if you touch a mushroom, no matter how poisonous it is
But if you're running through the wild, collecting mushrooms, be sure to wash your hands as often as possible, for you don't want any unlucky circumstances lead to the case that any poisons get in touch with either your mouth / eyes etc. or edibles you touch, after you've touched a poisonous mushroom...

after i handle deadly or potentially deadly mushrooms i make sure to wash my hands liberally with a good soap before i eat or put my fingers into my mouth, but that's about it and that is often considered to be unneccesarily cautious. i recommend it on general principle.

Credible Links???

I've fried up a few Death Caps (Amanita phalloides) and chewed them up then spat them out for a laugh

All they tasted of was the butter they'd been fried in!

Didn't do me any harm. I'm still here!

You're overly cautious. I've seen multiple mycologists chew and spit out very poisonous, or deadly poisonous mushrooms. I don't make a habit of tasting random mushrooms myself, but that is because i don't like having awful flavours in my mouth, or burning my tongue on peppery mushrooms.

Well cooking and chewing a death surely a pretty unwise idea since the most dangerous part in them are Aminitines, which are peptides that can't be destroyed by cooking them. That's what makes them so dangerous!
You better don't do that again! Chewing a small part of it, which wasn't even swallowed sure isn't deadly but gives you a good chance of a several hours in ass pain!
There's no Problem in eating fried Aminata Muscaria but Aminata Phalloides stays cooked almost as deadly as it is, when you try it fresh...

Amatoxin I'm sure knows this. I doubt she expected the cooked material to be any less poisonous than the fresh. Yet, as i said, many people taste and spit out poisonous mushrooms with NO negative results. It's not that dangerous, unless someone decided to slap you on the back or some stupid shit, and you swallowed it accidently. That'd be pretty fucked up.

I regularly chew unidentified fungi, it isn't dangerous at all if you spit it out. I have never tried a death cap, although i have chewed what i believe to be Galerina marginata without any negative effects at all.

To be honest even if you did swallow a bit that size i doubt it would do you huge damage, if we are talking about tiny pieces for taste testing. I wouldn't want to try it though :ooo:

Well, cooking a deathly mushroom for tasting it, sounds like the person thinks it'll kill the poisons, or why would you cook it at all? (It's a serious question  )
I'd NEVER do it. Anyone who's interested in the taste of such mushrooms can do it, but one never knows for sure

I never taste any mushroom I suspect (or know) is dangerously poisonous.

There has been at least one known case of poisoning where a guy was tasting the peppery Russulas and spitting it out but must have tasted too many of them. The poisoning wasn't dangerous, but neither were the mushrooms tasted.

Since the taste of the deadly mushrooms isn't an important feature for identification, I don't bother with it. In general, the only reason for tasting a mushroom in the field is because the tasting will assist with the ID.

Happy mushrooming!

Well, cooking a deathly mushroom for tasting it, sounds like the person thinks it'll kill the poisons, or why would you cook it at all?

Generally, yes. I would agree. However, Amatoxin knows better than that. One of the "trusted identifiers" on this site, you know.

Ummm.... what the fuck??

I expect he is dead or in need of a liver transplant, if that was indeed a. phalloides.

Why did he take so long to chew it? Looked like he was gonna puke the whole time.

There has been at least one known case of poisoning where a guy was tasting the peppery Russulas and spitting it out but must have tasted too many of them. The poisoning wasn't dangerous, but neither were the mushrooms tasted.

Really? I actually like the taste of the peppery red-come-purple Russulas species, if they were not poisonous i think they would be good flavourings in certain foods.

I "somehow" doubt that this is really an Aminata Phalloides. Any reliable source will tell you that even a middle sized fruit can kill and eating this for getting" high" is bull shit, in my opinion!

A while ago I emailed the SomaShaman people questions about the A. phalloides video, and got no response.
A week later I emailed them questions about buying their book and DVD, and got an immediate response.
I urge others to email them questions about the A. phalloides video, to get to the bottom of it.
There are a couple other videos out there (on UTube) of him eating large fresh A. muscaria.
His videos make me laugh for some reason.. the guy is over the top.

This guy just seems to be an total idiot! I'm not sure if I really mean that but somehow I wish he dies from eating an A. phalloides (if it really is one...)
Warning people from not doing it but also say that it get's him to a state of Ecstasy, is a pretty safe way to lead some idiot kis,, to try the same thing...

Yeah, I've seen those... I thought he looked familiar. I thought he was a brain dead whack job hippie in that stunt too. Ate the Fly Agaric down a lot faster than the Death Cap, I might add..?

It gave me a kind of buzz. Smiling in the face of death n stuff! I knew cooking wouldn't break the toxins down, I was just interested in what it tasted like

Yeah well, I was just outing myself as a real Mycophile
And I have actually no idea of how most mushrooms taste. For me, they all taste like snails (Don't worry CureCat, it's just what I think snails taste like  )
