Stumps covered with substrate...clip Em, eat Em, or what??

Have noticed that many people leave the stumps on their shrooms when harvesting

-stumps that are covered in unappetizing substrate which could be many things, but obviously poo is the big one I and anyone I know would not want to eat(a little verm/coir/peat is prob livable but not poo)

-noticed many of those same people include the nasty stumps in their total harvest weight

My personal opinion on the matter is that for a grower wishing to produce an 'artisan' product, it seems it's silly to put so much work into growing these magical creatures only to wolf them down without trimming the nasty ends. Imagine if you went to the local farmers market for nice chanterelles and the ends were not trimmed but covered in dirt etc...not to apetizing IMO, and I would be pissed if the weight the price was based on including the dirt, ug.

I've noticed people really appreciate properly clipped shrooms as do I...so every one gets trimmed and if the substrate is brf cakes, or a verm/coir sub then would still keep the stumps for tea or something ...

Anyway sorry for the long post, what is everyones thoughts on this???

i agree with you.

but humans are greedy fucks.

if assholes can sell you dirt and vermiculite at 10$ a gram. they will try their damndest.

All that gunk at the bottom is negligible at best, it's not like you have grams of the stuff attached. I used to rub it off when I got fruits like that.

Better than partially moist fruits.

I was talking about purchasing them, not selling. I've never sold mushrooms.

But you are correct that this would add up on large scale transactions.

Before starting to grow, every shroom I'd ever seen or bought was had dirt/verm on stumps, hopefully I've never eaten poo covered ones yuck

I take a knife and scrape off everything that's attached to the stem...not sure what a stump is. :shrug: Not sure why anyone would just cut off the bottom of a stem simply because there is substrate on it. It comes off....it's not too difficult.

I really don't think any of these people who take pictures of all of their mushrooms in a pile intend to leave any chunks of sub on their mushrooms. Honestly I don't clean them too hard unless there's a lot of mycelium on the stems as well. If there's loose substrate and bits of WBS on some of them I'll toss it in dehydrator and everything brushes off easily as it dries.
