Fact of the day: Traveling to the Andromeda Galaxy (Mind = Blown) * 3
    #17002366 -

Fact of the day.

If you traveled for 38,000 YEARS at the speed of light (186,000 miles per SECOND)....You would still have another 2.5 MILLION YEARS to go before you got to the Andromeda Galaxy.

Andromeda Galaxy is 2,538,000 light years away.

Seriously, just imagine...FIRST SIX SECONDS at SPEED OF LIGHT:
one one-thousand (186,000 miles)
two one-thousand (372,000 miles)
three one-thousand (558,000 miles)
four one-thousand (744,000 miles)
five one-thousand (930,000 miles)
six one-thousand (1,116,000 miles)

Anyone capable of visualizing this speed? How about conceptualizing a time of 2.538 million years? Pretty hard to do considering I barely remember what I had for dinner today!

We are only 8.3 light MINUTES (93 million miles) away from our sun (a single star the size of 1.3 million earths).

The inward planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) are closer to the sun.

The outward "Gas Giant" planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) are much further away.

Earth = 8.3 light minutes (each second 186,000 miles)
Jupiter = 40 light minutes away from sun
Neptune = 4.18 light HOURS away from the sun!

Here is a quick size scale of the gas giants.

Earth
Neptune = 58 earths + 13 moons
Uranus = 64 earths + 27 moons
Saturn = 764 earths + 62 moons
Jupiter = 1,321 earths + 67 moons

****SUN**** = 1,300,000 earths

More precisely, it would take us (here on earth) 2.5 Million years to observe the traveler going to the Andromeda galaxy.

To the traveler it takes an arbitrarily short period of time depending on how close to the speed of light you go.  You could make it in your lifetime if you went close enough to the speed of light.

Here is a cool little calculator,

http://ftlfactor.com/srcalc/

If you want to go to the Andromeda galaxy and you want to do it at 1g acceleration so you feel the same 'gravity' as earth it would take you about 30 years to get there.  From the earth's perspective it would take the 2.5 million years like you said.

All we need is for engineers to get off their asses and make a ship that can accelerate at 1g for 30 years straight. :lol:

Theres gotta be a way to break/get around/change the speed of light
