Dangerous Wildlife Encounters

Hey all,

I'm just curious how you expert mushroom hunters deal with the occasional wildlife encounter. I'm going to be hunting in forest that is home to tigers, panthers, and a few species of poisonous snakes and would love to know any helpful tips to help me avoid these encounters if possible.

Try looking for them.  Then you will be ready and expecting them.  If you happen upon a Mushroom all the better.

Don't know too much about the cats other than what the books tell you to do.  The venomous snakes are right on par with finding a good mushroom for me, better even.  Mid west? just watch out for where you're reaching into and what you're stepping over and anything else would have to be out in the open, in plain day.  And the amazing thing about snakes, is you can just walk around them.

I was bootlegging a cow field a few weeks ago and made my way around all the cows/bulls etc. and was walking into the sun towards the tree line to get to the creek that ran along it, eyes mostly on the ground and as soon as I passed the shadow line I found myself nose to nose with a jet black cow/bull I didn't check.  He was staring at me and vice versa so I just cut back and slowly made my way off, no sudden moves etc.  That's about as close as I've come to getting myself screwed.  I've found some great snakes though, I've seen hawks, 3 racoons doing their thing, lizards uncountable, I was at a horse field and managed to sneak up on a group of turkeys raising hell against crows and just sat back and listened to them putt and purr, learing how to talk turkey.  If you're really worried just get a ccp and pay attention to what's in season, you'll be good to go.  Carry a camera.

BTW how often do you run into tigers in the midwest usa?  You NEED to get pictures of that!

I would guess there are a bit more tigers in the India part of 'Midwest, USA/Hyderabad, India'! :wink::lol:

You can wear snake guards on your shins so they can't bite you while you are walking around.  They are very similar to shin guards people wear for sports, but thinner.  You could make one out of some old plastic, snakes can't bite through much.

The rest of the animals will be more scared of you than you are of them.

If you are worried about it carry some bear spray.

That's why I wear boots when I go out. I don't feel like finding a copperhead the wrong way. I know I've almost stepped on them before.

And for that matter, take a walking stick if youre worried.That also helps with the innumerable spider webs you will be bound to find.

Making loud noises also deters animals from being around you. They tend to keep their distance.

My friend and I were at out in the woods at one of our hunting spots last saturday when a bear started huffing at us.  Of course our favorite mushroom hunting hill is covered in bear scat and sign.  Like everyone says, just move away without any sudden movements and don't startle the animal.  Normally we make enough noise not to startle the bears, but we somehow caught this one off guard.  We drove to the other side of the mountain and had a shot fly over our heads as soon as we got out of the car.  We decided to go back and try our luck with the bear :/

When out in the woods it's a good idea to stop every fifty paces or so and just listen.  Listening to the woods is good for you.

Dogs. I bring the dogs. I rely heavily on them,  They are mushroom hunting dogs and they let you know whats up way before you realize your encountering a possible wildlife threat. In my 30 or so years of mushroom hunting I have only had a few encounters which I felt was a bit threatening. All in California. The most memorable was a Mountain lion Encounter In  the San Mateo Canyon area of Riverside Co, CA. March of 94 I was on my way to a very old Live Oak grove to search out blewits Lipista Nuda and Chanterelle's. I was walking down a narrow canyon with granite wall when I heard the strangest screeching, growling sound I have ever herd. Stopped me dead in my tracks. I look up and on the rock ledge about 30 40  feet is this Mountain lion,  Looks as if she is about 120lb.s Its all puffed and She is standing  her ground. Making the most gut wrenching noises, I felt like running but I was told never run just  raise your hand make noises.  Throw rocks at it. so that is what i did.  The two dogs I had with me were going after it as well barking trying to reach it. She stood her ground and even took a swipe at one of the dogs causing a 5 in. laceration crossed his face. She just changed positions a few time. I then just started backing up finally got the dogs back it was back to the truck and to the vets office where my dog had about 20 stitches, The next day went the same way no encounter and collected about 20 pounds of blewits and 16 pounds of chanterells.
The Other encounter was with a bear in Sequoia N. f. I I was collecting some White Matsutake on an edge of a little meadow and a pine flat I here this grunting and running sound  and that is when I realize that on one side of me there are two cubs and on the other side  of me is what appears to be a really pissed off bear running at me and im in the middle so i get the adrenalin rush and start running.  She chased me for only about 20 feet,  Once I was clear of her cubs she stopped turned around and went to them. Then  took them off in the forest.No dogs this time. Snakes no big deal I run into them all the time and they never seem to be to interested in what im doing, or even aware that I even Exist. I have had worse experienced with hornets nest. I had my share of stings.

And yet the most dangerous thing I have run into is a human with a gun :shrug: Stared down the barrel of a deer hunter's rifle while I was walking on a public nature trail during the off-season a few weeks ago. People suck. Especially white trash poachers  :shake:

Luckily we dont have any poisonous snkaes here, everything else i just fight with my buck knife, like bear grills :tongue2:

Baaaad ass dude, I LOVE florida!  For real.  Those gators do the quick burst where they'll be on you before you know it but you're good, like bears don't get between them and the little ones.  That eastern is nice too, you pissed it off it's flattening out lol, bad ass those are priceless finds..

That's perfect timing, I bet she's about to drop in the next few days or just did.. awesome!  I'd be willing to bet she's about to since all the area's still swollen, usually once they drop they look empty.
