Why not host shroomery IRC on another server?

I dont get why irc is down... there are thousands of free irc servers that could temporarily host irc.  My guess is there are problems with this website's irc interface, but why not start a generic temporary channel in the meantime and add a note/links on the chat page?

People are whining every day about irc and it seems like such a simple fix?

There are security concerns regarding outsiders having access to Shroomerites IP addresses. There are probably other concerns as well.

We've already been kicked off of another IRC server because whoever was behind the DDOS that brought Shroomery down began DDOSing the new IRC server. Hopefully the admins will chime in with more info.

If no one is going to provide a BNC, flood protection, auto-ban scripts, auto-kick bots, and diligently keep them updated with the know how to do so there is no point.

Too much drama, basically. And not enough resources to oversee chat properly. Every major problem the site has ever had, from DDoS attacks to the ripper incident, has originated on IRC. It attracts a different type of crowd from the website, there isn't much of an official admin presence there, and it's just a pretty big liability in general. The fact the attacks followed our members to a different server helps illustrate my point; it's just not worth the hassle. Plus there are so many IRC networks out there already, and it's pretty simple for anyone to start their own if they want more customization or control. It's not like the BB where there's unique features and post history and uploads and stuff. All people have to do is go find a new IRC server, register their nicks, register a channel, and get back to business. With limited resources available, we're more focused on securing the site right now. We really don't need to be associated with a controversial, semi-unofficial chat service at this point. Especially when there are tons of volunteers out there who are willing to pick up the slack, and can probably do a better, more focused job running IRC anyway.

We may use this as an opportunity to add XMPP-based instant messaging to the board, Facebook style. I know some people have asked about that in the past. But it would be pretty far down the road. For the time being, we really just want to be left alone and make sure we aren't vulnerable to these kinds of attacks in the future. I'm sure after all the downtime in the past month, people can understand and appreciate that impulse.

As a semi-active board member and a full time IRC advocate (not shroomery irc, others) this is the best thing you can ever do.

Basic darwinism, adapt to survive. Everyone can deal with the end of the channels. We are here, we are dealing. How many can deal with the end of this forum? Without the forum there would be no one to even deal with it ending, because it would be gone. Very paradoxical.

I have been coming back hitting the web ann & feedback sub forum looking for a chance to explain to every loyal member that a few bad eggs have spoiled the bunch. Instead of eating rotten eggs, wouldn't it be best to toss the bathwater out without it affecting the baby?

Please consider locking this thread.

Let this be the end of it with answers everyone can understand and reference for the future.

Merely knowing the answer will not quiet them down. For that they would need to understand the answer, and for them to care more about the site as a whole.

True that, if IRC is putting things at risk, might as well scrap it for the greater good of the website!

It used to be pretty awesome back in the day, but pnutbot started to lose his memory, and the old regulars quit for the most part.  I shall miss the old days tho.
