Those are just spores from the cap, it happens when the caps open up to a certain point. It's harmless and common.------------------ -`~Psilo Cyber-`~ You only have 1 life. Don't piss it away on a career. *Make $60 a month at my site. Check it out.* Visit my site

Any pics ?I've never seen any black caps from the B+. The only time I've seen black caps were from casings that were badly infected with cobweb mold. -peace-

I frequently have black caps, sometimes it is just a ring, other times it covers most of the cap.. its just spores.. dont worry about it.. you can wipe it off :P but why..

Well.. M5150 has been around and growing for a while... I'm sure he knows the difference between spores on caps and black caps... black caps do show up from time to time... and it usually means the mushroom has aborted the growth process for one reason or another, usually because a contamination is present or the proper growing conditions (humidity, fresh O2)has stopped, this the mushroom aborted the growing process.-peace- www.thehawkseye.com

Sounds like a friend of mine's problem. Some sort of bacterial growth on the caps that is black and sometimes turns the caps completely black especially during the final stages of growth around the veil breaking time. He also has been having rather poor quality veils (crudely put, but basically what he means). General concensus is that it is either moisture (or more specifically humidity) or oxygen. He's taken steps to reduce humidity and provide them with more oxygen and from early signs the problem may not exist.

hi mycelium, i was happy to see your post.iposted the same thing 2 days ago. take a look at "contam. question" on may 13 iagree it looks like some comtam and not spores. people say they appear on top of cap but this seems odd. well out of a good bunch, only 5 got the small dark(greyish-black) circle directly on top center. all others were fine. as mycelium said they arent aborts they continued their development.
