It looks like it would take a little under a year at 1 g acceleration (for the stationary observer). I suppose you'd have to double that to slow back down.

Yes, but in order to accelerate constantly you would have to increase the Force continously as you approach the speed of light. The amount of Work your engines would have to perform for that would be crazy.

That doesn't make sense. Velocity is relative, acceleration is absolute.

Not sure what you mean. Wouldn't you have to slow back down before reaching your destination so that you didn't go past it or smash into it (unless your destination was itself moving away from you very fast when you started)? If you didn't want to exceed 1 g at any point, you'd basically have to spend as much time slowing down as it took you to get up to speed.

Right, you flip over at the midpoint and decelerate.
A badass pilot can do it as a skew turn and not have to shut off the jet.

Robert Heinlein spent a good bit of time working out the math and used the idea in several of his novels.
I think Time for the Stars probably goes into the most detail. Also Farmer in the Sky.

Yes, you are correct.

2) we could start working on a star ship with today's technology

So if we were traveling the speed of light, it would still take us 36 years to get there.

We could build a generation ship and go to the stars over decades or centuries.
We don't really have a propulsion system just yet, but we could by the time the rest of the ship was ready if we worked on it.
and really, it wouldn't be all that terribly expensive as big projects go.

Lol...it would be incredibly expensive...and we don't have many of the technologies that would be needed...

Not to mention the fact that we would be sending people to live in a box for generations, headed to someplace that probably is little more than a rock...

I can't imagine a bigger waste of time, money, and other resources.

I guess the other classic sci-fi solution is to figure out some way to keep people in stasis for long periods.

It seems like a big stumbling block for space projects right now is the extreme energy cost of getting equipment up there by rocket. I wonder if the "space elevator" concept or similar ideas  will ever become a reality. Different engineering hurdles but it would take a lot less energy to get stuff up there if you weren't pushing through the atmosphere at extreme speed.

That's what they told Columbus and Magellan.

...

Really not that expensive. And the technology to build the structures exists, it's not much different from a submarine.
People live a long time in isolated conditions- islands have small populations that stay stable.
It wouldn't be that hard to make an artificial structure that could house say, 10,000 people.

What you find when you get to the destination is a great discussion.
Cool thing about a generation ship is that if you don't like it when you get there you can just keep on truckin'.

And countless other people who didn't get as lucky...

You're out of your mind if you think that building a spacecraft to house 10,000 people for hundreds of years wouldn't be expensive...

Looks like a 'they laughed at galileo' fallacy to me.

Nobody told Columbus and Magellan that they would have to live in a box for generations to wind up at a rock not suitable for human life.

People coming to the New World from Europe spent weeks or months in small, dangerous boxes for the chance to step out on virgin shores.
Raising your family in a space ship wouldn't be any weirder than living in Antarctica, or even a big city like Tokyo or New York.

It's easy to scoff at space travel. At the same time, it's closer and more feasible than it might at first seem to be.

As big projects go, not all that terribly expensive. And you get to spread the cost over decades.
Not cheap by any means, bu well within our possible budget.

No...it's much farther than that...

How are you going to feed 10,000 people for hundreds of years?

You're dreaming...you clearly haven't thought this out at all.

Yea, its a stupid idea.

Give it a couple thousand years and maybe artificial intelligence may want to make the journey.  Though I cant imagine why.

yeah cause intelligent beings that can travel millions of light years through hyperspace are going to be war-like I'm sure /sarcasm
1. Because most war civilizations usually don't make it to hyperspace, they usually destroy themselves before they get that far. You don't progress for millions of years of evolution by being destructive
2. Any species capable of intergalactic space travel obviously has technology 100000x superior to ours, if they wanted to wipe us out in a single blink they could and there would be absolutely nothing we could do about it.
3. We would already be dead

So yeah I know you were being facetious but I felt like poking holes in that because I fucking hate that presumption that people think aliens would be malevolent like we are. Too much fucking Independence Day and Men in Black.

Indeed

Hydroponic farms.

We need a few new technologies to make it happen, fusion power being the most obvious.
But we'll get those technologies in the coming decades. Meanwhile, we can start designing and building the part we can build.

It's big, it's expensive, but somebody is going to do it, and sooner than you guys think.
People have always gone and explored things, it's built into us. We'll go explore space.

This was fun for a while, but when people start calling people stupid it's less fun.
I'll leave this discussion alone and you guys can go feel smug and superior.
