You know the earth lights up at night and is visible from space?

at night time, when the earth is viewed from space, it has this golden shimmer to it. kind of like gold tinted stars are present on the face of the earth. it's actually really beautiful if you've never seen it before.

as you can witness in this wonderful video, free of charge. it almost looks kind of surreal and computer generated.

but the significance of this is, we would be totally fucked if aliens decided to attack us. all our shit is lit up and they would know exactly where to strike.

yeah cause intelligent beings that can travel millions of light years through hyperspace are going to be war-like I'm sure /sarcasm
1. Because most war civilizations usually don't make it to hyperspace, they usually destroy themselves before they get that far. You don't progress for millions of years of evolution by being destructive
2. Any species capable of intergalactic space travel obviously has technology 100000x superior to ours, if they wanted to wipe us out in a single blink they could and there would be absolutely nothing we could do about it.
3. We would already be dead

So yeah I know you were being facetious but I felt like poking holes in that because I fucking hate that presumption that people think aliens would be malevolent like we are. Too much fucking Independence Day and Men in Black.

totally presumptive!

there could be a million and 1 different outcomes.

it is no where near as cut and dry as saying that only those of pure intentions could have possibly progressed so far,technologically. Who knows what kind of resources and things of the like they have access to on their home planet that could have made there technological advances in intergalactic travel so much easier.

Maybe their civilization has been around millenia longer than ours, simply placing them further down the technological timeline, than the human race.

or a thousand other, probably even more likely scenarios. Those are just the first two things that came into my head.

I am not, nor am i trying to be argumentative. Your reply just sounded so " no way could anything like that happened, its a fact only nice aliens could possibly succeed in intergalactic space travel" :aliendance:

Advanced aliens would have ways to fuck our shit up that aren't dependent on our light emissions.

Send a neutron star to another dimension and have it exit back into our spacetime in the core of the sun. That would mess with us to no end.

it's obvious how curious earth would appear to aliens, and why they would want to take a closer look/visit. but i think after seeing that there were "humanoid" life maybe they are just looking to hook up for some strange. that's what i would do.

Not only that, space programs to date rely heavily on technology developed for war. Hell, what they use to get up there is basically a huge ballistic missile adapted to carry a different payload.

Õur kind of spacetravel will only colonize the stars if we build generation ships, ships where communities live their lives generation after generation while they travel.  These communities will have to be intensely peaceloving and coooperative or they won';t last the journey.

The technology necessary for us to survive a meteor shower is far beyond us at the moment. Secondly, what could would a warship of ours be in space if we aren't even going to be traveling faster than a 1/100 of the speed of light? The closest planet that contains water and in the habitable distance from it's sun in it's solar system is HD85512B and it is 36 light years away. So if we were traveling the speed of light, it would still take us 36 years to get there.

There is no chance we are working on some intergalactic mothership. That shit would get shot down faster than a real Al Queda member flying across our borders.

No, not US.  For the ones left behind on earth it would take 36 years, for the ones flying at 99.9% the speed of light it would take less than two weeks. at 99.999% the speed of light the voyage lasts three and a half minutes.

You forget time slows the closer you get to the speed of light. At the absolute speed of light, time stands still in the vessel.

Well, it does not really make sense as particles with mass can only approach the speed of light, not actually get to that point. Even if we could, only an outside observer lying on the same axis would say that we needed 36 years. In that limit, from our perspective, we would be there instantly.

That's what such an external observer would see in principle, yes. For you in the space ship, time just goes normal. I would not want to experience the acceleration to get even close to 99.9c.
