P Caster find and spore prints

PLEASE DO NOT LIST SPECIFIC LOCATIONS, ESPECIALLY THE ONES I PICK FROM THANK YOU.
The largest cap was about an inch across,
which is the largest I have found to date.

How are these distinguishable from Pan foes and Pan subs??

Also, are they on their way to becoming a recognized species, or are they one already?  Any help would be appreciated...

This article, called "Observations Regarding the Suspected Psychoactivity of Panaeolus Foenisecci" (from here on The Shroomery) states that some specimens of Pan foe have tested positive for being active, although very weakly. That could explain why some of your specimens showed a little bit of bruising.

I dunno if foes grow all the way down in Florida, though. Those just look kinda like some I found, but I really don't know much about the Paneolus genus so they are probably not them. They could be, though, couldn't they?

According to GGreatone, P. foes don't occur this
far south. I don't know enough about their range
to comment either way. GG turned me on to this
particular specimen and I can personally say that
it is more than weakly active. I would say it is
a moderately active species.

Rebel_Steve, if you have a copy of Mushrooms Demystified, look on p.920 and following under Technical Literature. Those are monographs, or contributions toward monographs.

There you can see why many of us hold people like Alexander Smith and Harry Thiers in such high esteem. Look how many monographs Smith did - it's truly mind-boggling. I have a hard time imagining that anybody will ever equal that volume of work in a lifetime.

Mr_M, you asked once how I knew anything about Melanoleuca, and I mentioned Linnea Gilman. If you look on p.921, you'll find her name (with Orson Miller) as the author of a monograph on Melanoleuca.

Ahh, thank you for the info.  I figured it was something like that.  But how does one actually go about making a monograph?  It just seems like that would be an awfully hefty task.

There would have to be a bunch of scientists working on it in places all over the country, who would all compile their data together in one source, somehow. 

Gee, the Internet would be a good way to do that!

Heck, we are practically making monographs here, aren't we?!  If we kept all the good pics and info on different species that people post here organized, and compiled them into databases, we would be then-- wouldn't we? 

Is something like that being done here already?  If so, how can I get involved??

Anyway... Sorry for going so off-track.  Perhaps you can answer some of those questions at least?  Thanks!

Wow!  I really have to get that damn book.  I have a $20 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble--do you think they sell it there?  Would $20 even be enough for it?!

Anyway... I have just started learning about famous mycologists, and I'd really like to study more about them.  Heck, I hope I can be termed a famous mycologist someday!  My major is biology, and I'm finding this an extremely interesting field of study.  It's a fuckin' great hobby that doesn't get boring.  Plus I have so much more to learn! :smile:

Well, I am gonna start searchin' on the Internet for certain names I've heard or seen here and there.  If anyone has any good links on famous mycologists and their work, or would just like to contribute more names to look up, they would be appreciated! :smile:

'Nomad, i edited out the 'general' location...'it's kinda a small town.

Neat find,

They like to grow from light and airy patches of grass,
And when you walk on the grass it is "squishy" like walking on a bed.

And they do not grow in every lawn,
This is why i edited out the 'general location,
The do not grow on just any lawn,

'it is kind of a small town when you put into account how many other shroomers in the area that watch these messages boards
(and whoever else might be included in the area reading the messages on this BB like the police and so-on)

-That is correct.  I have found them in Chicago and Seattle, and as far off as Hong Kong and and as close as Georgia, but never in Florida (not yet at least). They probably occur along the panhandle from Pensacola east to Jacksonville, but probably not as far south as Gaineville (probably not).

It is just like how they find morel mushrooms in Georgia, but  never have the been found in Florida.  :grin:'though probably not ' never ' :grin:

Also, the Amanita muscaria var. muscaria grows along the same stretch of the panhandle from Pensacola to Jacksonville, but they are probably never found any further south than Gainesville (and i stress the word probably  :grin: because i am making a broad generalization)
-and because i have never before encountered Amanita muscaria, yet.
