black spore prints....
    #982391 - 10/22/02 09:21 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

ok...

Once it is determined that a certain mushroom has a black sporeprint.....and it is obvious by the looks of things that the said mushroom is some sort of panaeolus, is it safe to say that this mushrooms CAN'T be poisonous?

I have a collection that I am unable to identify. Would there be any harm in eating a few if I am certain that they are some sort of pan?

In other words, are there ANY mushrooms with a black sporeprint that will kill you?

If they are growing out of dung, have a black spore print and are not completely white, they are possibly ok, but, I wouldnt eat anything unless you get an idea.

They are categorized as being : small to medium sized, fragile, dung or grass, bell shaped cap to conical when you young. Gills are typically attached, with gray or deep brown to black when mature. Spore print will be black. No volva or veil. Stem is usually thin, brittle or fragile.

I think the more common on dung will be subbalteatus and campanulatus. Do a search and check out the pics to see if they are similar...

Is it gorwing out of dung or what kind of climate are you in?

I wish I could take a pic...but my camera is broken

what do you mean "they", angryshroom?
let me decribe these mushrooms to the best of my ability....

long, thin, brittle, tan to brownish-red stems...brown gills, black spores. A nipple is present on most of the caps....which are brown towards the center near the nipple, fading to a tan-yellow toward the margin....no veil

I found them all directly on horse dung. I was hoping they were pan subbs, but I'm beginning to think they aren't, for absense of a red ring on the outer edge of the cap. They don't bruise at all. I'm really just curious about whether they would harm me if I were to eat them.....

I thank you all for your responses

Sorry, I was refering to a Panaeolus species. Most Pan?s have jet black spore prints and are pretty brittle.

Do a search on Pan subbs,
and do they resemble these at all?

That is an image taken by MAIA, they are Panaeolus Papilonaceus

"do they resemble these at all?"

at all, yes....completly....no.

I have looked at many many pictures of different active and inactive panaeolus species, and none seem to match. However, I've also seen DIFFERENT photos of the SAME species which looked totally inalike. I've also seen pictures of pan foeinski, or whatever it's called, and they had a picture of pan subs......

one difference I noticed between these and most alike pans are the super long stems these have....

The caps remsemble those in this photo of pan castaneifolius....but don't match the description....
damnit
won't upload.....

There are several panaeolus species in the coprophilic fungi classification. Some guides describe as Pan. Sphrinctinus, Pan. Campanulatus and Pan. Papilonaceus has being the same specie called Pan. Papilonaceus, some might disagree though.
Several Pan. Papilonaceus growing from horse dung, note how they differ in shape and size,

This were IDed as Pan. Sphrinctinus,

IDed as Pan. Campanulatus,

Some Pan. Foenisecii, they are clearly macroscopically different from Pan. Papilonaceus, (damn flies!!!)

Another common coprophilic fungi is Pan. Antillarum, they are Copelandia Cyanescens lookalikes but easeally distinguishable,

Enjoy,
MAIA

well....
it's none of those

there are really distinct nipples
and really really long stems....those are the most outstanding unique qualities

otherwise than those, they fit the description of most pans
this is maryland by the way
I thought these were subbs but alas they are not...I found one subb, and it has a red ring around the cap, unlike these. They're yellowish tan-brown color gradiance is the same as subbs tho.

Just because there is a ring around the cap does not mean they are subbalteatus!!

The most destinct features of the differences between a foensceii and subb is the stalk color, gill structure and sporeprint...

but it was a sub,and the ring was not the only thing that made me label it a subb...I simply said that these mushrooms didn't have the ring that the sub I found did.

besides, I know what a foensceii looks like....in fact I found some in the grass today, along with some agaricus that made a great sandwich

I ate some like these and didn't run into any problems. They were noticeably psychoactive though.

I'd say that panaeolus resembles far fewer poisonous genera than psilocybe
