Comets, meteorites, and other spacely things (edit, one's coming!)
    #16345897 -

10/2012 edit....
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/technology-blog/comet-due-2013-could-brighter-full-moon-004852031.html

:awebig: a big one's on the way

Im not 100% sure what Im asking, but is there a newsletter or something somebody can join to hear about near earth happenings in space?

I was reminded earlier about Hale-Bopp Comet and how bad-ass that was to see when it passed nearby those few days. (the Marshal Applewhite, Heavens Gate, ufo behind the comet people, thing),
Anybody remember how fucking badass that thing was? Stepping outside to see a COMET flying by !!!!! :mindblown:

:awehigh:

and with the eclipses and transits happening lately, plus the meteor showers nobody ever hears about, I want to know when these things go down but not have to be part of some astronomy forum or whatever.

So, where do the space nerds get their info? I wanna join em :awedance:

thanks in advance

EDIT: and while I have you here, are there any meteorite collectors/hunters here? I just bought one the other day and think it's a pretty bitchin thing. Id like to hear about what you have and how you got em. This is mine, I believe it's a 'stoney chondrite' variety meteorite.

Where are the subreddits at? Im looking through the "SCIENCE" portion, which I assume is correct, no?

I have a four inch reflector, which is pretty small.  Still, I love looking through it.  The Moon is my favorite to look at, Jupiter and Saturn are generally pretty good too.  I have yet to check out any comet with it though.

My girl got me a lower end telescope and I also really enjoy looking at the moon...partly because of how easy it is....but I downloaded Google Sky Map on my phone and used it to find Jupiter during the winter and was able to see the red and white bands on it. Not much more, but it was still a blast. I just have a really tough time securing it in place long enough to get a good look.

I just like looking at the night sky, its quick to find yourself so easily getting lost in it all.

My buddy and I go fishing way out in the boons and its so clear out there. I love it!
I still find it amazing that when its so clear I mistake whatever makes the Milky Way 'cloud' as a terrestrial cloud. Not sure if that's gasses or just an abundance of light.

I totally agree though...and its something that I, and most people just shrug off as common and normal...its amazing how we all just seem to ignore it when its sooooo fucking awesome.  We'll lay on the road out there and look up and just get lost in the enormity of it all, see meteorites streaking and just get all :Awemazing:

yay more people like me

Seriously though. study up on all that shit. It's all so fascinating. Stellar evolution blew my mind when we went through all that last semester. It was the only classes where I actually got close as hell to getting a 100% at the end. Most of my other grades are like low 90s and 80s.

:ahahaha::awethumb:

Ive never formally studied it. I took Astronomy in high school, but my teacher was a total cunt and made the class just AWFUL :ifyoucanawe:
It was more of a math class than anything....which sort of pissed me off. She found a way to make the universe suck, :wtf:the bitch!

Yeah man, Im 100% with you on this.
I have all "The Universe" DVDs, the Degrasse-Tyson guy trips me out

I wish I got the Science Channel. That 'Through The Wormhole' show looks sick as fuck!

Do you have or collect meteorites or anything?

Naw, I don't even have a telescope yet:lol:. Just some decent binoculars. I can find my way around the night time sky pretty well though.

People think I'm such a nerd when I can point out all the planets and bright stars in the sky by name. It's really not that hard to learn this stuff though. Just takes an interest.

also, I just read astronomy stuff on the internet a lot. I love going into the program Celestia and just move around the solar system, milky way, local group, universe. Whatever, y'know:shrug:

I'm pretty drunk right now so I hope that post turned out alright.
