How does a Blizzard authenticator work exactly?
    #16320262 -

Anyone here use a Blizzard authenticator?

How exactly does it work?

I live in the middle of nowhere with pretty much no cell phone reception so I am wondering if it would work for me or not.

Does it plug into my computer or is it wireless?

I really think this would be a good investment.....  Wow I am a nerd.

Not sure exactly how it works... but pretty sure it doesn't require any kind of cell phone reception, unless you are using the mobile app...
It just has a unique ID and you tie it to your battle.net account.
Then when you login to your account or in games it will give you an additional prompt for the authenticator code after your password
you just press the button on it and it generates a secure code.
And it remembers if you are logging into the exact same computer on the same connection then it will only ask for a code like once a week.
I'm guessing each authenticator device ID tied to your account generates a specific algorithm which only produces a certain spectrum of variables?
So there could maybe be thousands of possible codes but all unique to only that specific unit? That's my best guess.

The authenticator makes an internet connection with Blizzard's servers and generates a unique code for your account for a period of time before generating another code. The authenticator dongle is a USB device and will access the internet when connected. I'm pretty sure that's how it does it. I use the mobile app which uses either mobile internet or wifi.

Thank you Shroomism and damn.  I appreciate your informative responses.  You answered my questions and concerns.

@damnfan:  I heard the mobile app isn't worth it.  How do you feel about this?  Is the mobile app the only authenticator that you have used?

i have used both a regular blizzard authenticator and the mobile version.. i prefer the mobile app just because i always have my phone with me and i travel a lot.  it will not require a connection to the internet or 3g or w/e as the number generation is algorithm based.. the app will work even if you have no connection to any cell phone service.  i use it for diablo 3 and it will only ask for the code every once in awhile.. its been awhile since i played sc2 but i used to have to put in the code every time i played.. depends on the game i guess unless they have recently changed how it works..  the mobile app will be no different then the authenticator you can buy from blizz.. or in my case, the free ones you get from attending blizzcon..

Mobile app is awesome and the only one I use. I'd rather keep track of just my phone rather than my phone and a tiny authenticator that I'd probably lose all of the time.

I have one on my keychain, they don't connect to the internet, they don't plug in to anything.
Push the button and a random string of numbers come up every 30 seconds.

Stopped using the phone app cause I wiped my phone one day and then couldn't access my account for a week or two.
Ended up having to email them a scanned copy of my driver's license to get it back.

:themoreyouknow:

edit: oh yeah Blizzard sent me the authenticator for free cause I got hacked so many times back in WoW :thaaannks:

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus.
All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the
octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV.
But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns.
Also he got a race car.
Is any of this getting through to you?
