clone tissue... the picking!!!

Hello everyone!

Quick question for all you..

I cloned part of the stem from the biggest fruit i had, transfered to agar, then on to wbs, G2G to more jars, currently fruiting and all worked out.. not overly impressed so far as compared to multispore tho....

but here is the question!

When selecting a shroom to clone from, should one take a chunk from a cluster of shrooms or from a looner?

If i remember correctly. i selected a fruit from a 2nd flush that grew by itself, ie : not from a cluster of shrooms....

would it make any difference at all?

I'm posting this in advance becaus it deals with cloning, and i consider it advanced... i hope i'm right!!.. sorry if i'm not!

IMO, it wouldn't really make a difference; if it all is the same mycelium the genetics are the same, too.

Hmm.. cool.

It's hard to tell at this point, cuz i got very small pins, but they seem to be growing in clusters and singles as well.

I thought that clone tissue would give a symetrical pinset?????

Strange.. I'll post pictures tonight to compare casings made with clonse mycelium and casings done with mycelium transfered from a lid off of multispore mycelium!

Both were made same time, same manner, same conditions.... should be interesting!

Cloning isn't the solution to all problems. You have to clone the right genetics. Some strains are genetically inclined to fruit in clusters, some in loners, and some in a combination. Note that these characteristics are also often environmental and not genetic, so make sure it's not you before you blame the strain. Also, due to the localized competition for water and nutrients, cluster fruits tend to be smaller than individual fruits (in an optimum environment of course).

Choosing to clone from a cluster specimen or a lone specimen really depends. And of course, some strains of each would yield better than some strains of the other. Kinda depends on what you like.

Here is an example, (I know you guys have seen these before, but a picture can often illustrate many different things in different situations). Both pictures are of Hawaiians. Both are cloned cultures. The first regularly fruited with evenly dispersed fruits, the second with tightly packed clusters of smaller shrooms. The yield potential of each strain was comparable, performing similarly in a range of conditions. The cluster forming strain usually yielded a little more than the first.

As you can probably imagine, I didn't care enough about the slight yield increase to bother with the second strain. It was much more difficult to harvest and clean. The first strain also yielded perfect one dose closed cap fruits whereas the second strain took many fruits per dose.

So, in this case, I liked the strain which gave isolated fruits better, although it yielded slightly less. The issue is not cut and dry, and likely the specific strain you clone and your personal preferences will have more to do with it than any type of general guidline would.

Also want to add that just cloning doesn't necessarily give an even pin set. For one, you have to have mastered that area of the art. And two, some strains may not be genetically disposed to even pin sets. If you clone one of these, your chances of getting an even set are slim. Fortuanately, cubensis is resiliant enough that this is relatively rare, but there are many shades of grey. The only way to get kick ass strains, is to clone many fruits from many different multi-spore grows, and do trials with each strain. I probably cloned and tested about 10-20 different hawaiian isolates before I settled on the strain in the first picture as my favorite and standard cube strain.

It is true that clones are more likely to produce more even pin sets, but it's not necessarily the case. And master the pin set procedure before you even try and attribute it to the strain.

Pinset has to do with enviornmental conditions, too.  Just better to have a better substrain.

Cool.. thanks for the info!!! greatly apreciated. and answered many questions i had!

My strain is either " EQ, Wollongong, or Tapalpa " not sure anymore.. mixed up the labels, but no biggie,, i just go by the visuals... they are potent tho... 1.2 g does me just fine..

a " Fequent user " friend does 1.5 and says it's a bit much for him.. he does X all the time and usually takes 2.......

i'm quite content with that aspect. but i want an even pinset.. you are right. my techniques need to imporve... but i am getting better!!!!

Here is a pic of the 2 casings of Clone ( in the back ) and the mycelium i transfered from a lid of multispore jar to another grain jar... and transfered again....(on the left. closest)..
sorry for the poor angle... i would have had to dig thru other casings to get to them for a good picture.. i will upon harvest... later tonight!

Always hard to tell by pics, but do those casing have overlay? Might be part of the problem with pin sets...

just no casing layer... some overlaym, but the surface it nice and fluffy, not all dried up....
