THE SHROOMERY NEEDS AN iPhone/iPod/Android APP!!! Anyone else agree? * 3
    #16253976 -

What you guys think!? I personally think that being able to view guides, forums, etc on the go would be sick! And having a notification system would be very handy for regular forum users.
As well the Shroomery could make some money off of this so that they can continue providing these amazing services for years to come! I, myself, would surly pay for such an app!!

Any input?

What do these "apps" do in such a case where the only function is to use the site?  Are the phones so crippled that you need some team of software developers to produce a seperate product just so people can access the site?

What's going on?

Just a matter of convenience, such as being able to see new notification alerts from your homescreen.

I dunno about a whole app, but an actual mobile interface would be nice. :smirk:

I always wonder why you prod people, when you clearly know that's not the case.

I agree an app would be nice, my tablet doesn't play nice with the shroomery, dolphin browerser and the built in google search browser keep crashing and closing.

I have no clue on how to write smart phone apps... Maybe we could write it, but I think it would be a large project, and take a lot of time; which I don't have a lot of.

What about http://www.tapatalk.com/

you are the one with all your threads asking how to write make files and all this crap, I thought you would know. You are going to have to write a gui, but what exactly will this app do? Let you upload photos and what not? What will it be called, a shroomery app?

How is that not the case, and how would I know it isn't?

The website has a website, phones have web browsers, what could be the problem unless the browser is so fucked by the manufacturer its impossible to use?

Why would you need a separate application other than the web browser to view a website like this?

The site was built for desktop computers.  The idea of adding functionality to the interface is not ridiculous.  Even mobile sites often lack functionality.

I was on here today with my tablet posting and had no/zero problems with it crashing or force closing. I wonder why it was crashing on me the day?

I post here from my iPhone and my android tablet nearly every day.

I use Dolphin on both.

Never had a problem.

I dont have a problem either.  But clearly the web site is deigned to be used at a desk with a mouse and keyboard, like most forums and site.  The times are changin' and as the years go on people will use the traditional office setup to browse less and less.  Its probably too early to care yet, but give it a few years and forums/web sites set up like this will seem antiquated.

I keep having problems with it crashing. I think the cause of the problem might have something to do with .gif files in peoples avatars and signatures. It tends to close more on pages with a lot of gifs. Most likely is a hardware/graphics problem and not caused by the website.

A full fledged app is not required.  What could be done is mobile detection that uses css to restyle the forum to make it more mobile friendly.  Sometimes I'll fat finger and click the wrong thread.  I'm sure such problems are common.

But that brings up the question; Would an app be easier to make and just draw data from the forum, or would the mobile detection/css be more difficult to implement?

Either way, for me, issues with viewing the site on a mobile device are little to none and really don't require any fix.

Personally, I think mobile devices browsers will catch up to desktops and will automatically be able to reconstruct a site for easy mobile viewing.

That is my main problem, even with a large screen and the ability to zoom, it is difficult to click links on my iPad.  Especially the small Post Extras under posts.

Use opera mini guys. Works wonders.

Think of it like a 'full browser' emulator on your phone. With cursor etc etc. Really nifty and free too.

Oh it also 'compresses' the pages you view etc so less bandwidth is used + faster loadup times and er yeah.

there's no need for an app...just using "responsive ui" for the site so that it scales correctly depending on the platform and device.

it would be harder and more of a pain in the arse to have to make an app for ios, android, windows phone or whatever platform blah blah, easier to just maintain a website and have people go to a url in browser.
