iPod headphone jack issues!
    #5703581 - 06/02/06 10:45 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I have recently bought an iPod off some guy that knew I like to buy random stuff. I wanted to get an iPod for a while so I went through with it. It's a 2GB white nano. Paid 100$ for it. The next day, I bought an aluminum case for nearly half of what I paid for the iPod. I believe in protecting my investment. Unfortunately, soon after I bought it, the headphone jack went faulty. I have had this happen so many times before and I've never found a solution to it. Warranty has covered me before but not this time around. When any headphones are plugged into the input of the iPod, only the right channel plays. The only way to get both of them to play is take the headphone plug out by about half so only the first ring is in contact with the channel. That way, I believe that it doesn't play in stereo though, but instead both headphones in mono sound. In addition, the plug always falls out, iPod pauses, and it's annoying. I know this is a common problem, at least for me, and I was wondering if there was a common solution to this. If anybody has experienced this, please post your fix. I haven't taken it to a technician yet, but I thought I'd ask here first. Thanks!

An iPod nano is new enough that they should all still be under warranty? If you PM me the S/N I can look up the warranty information for you.

It has nothing to do with the headphones as he did give me the ipod headphones with the iPod and those do the same thing as well. Unfortunately it was just a private sale and the jack did work at the time that he sold it to me, so I can't do anything with that. It propably is still under warranty but I don't have the original reciept. I suppose apple would have all the details though? Unfortunately, the i pod does have a bit of physical damage to the left side. Opposite the headphone jack, but they could always use that against me. I'll pm you the s/n. Thanks for replies guys!

if they dont repair it without a receipt and try to use some other damaged part against you...i would never buy anything apple again. HP fixed my laptop a few years ago and i had no receipt, and the reason it broke was it was in my backpack and i slammed it down too hard, and it cracked the screen a blew out the blacklight? They fixed it no questions asked, had it back in a week. I have a feeling apple will try to make it good.

peace

ps...sometime in the corporate/retail world, you have to be an asshole to whoever you talk to to get what you want. Every store ive ever been in if the customer throws a big enough fit, they get what they want.

Dont know if you have tried switching earplugs yet. But same thing happened to me and it turns out my earplugs were broken. Ipod Earplugs are pure shit, your basicly paying for the name when you buy them. I bought a $15 Sony Earplug which sound alot better and were cheaper by $20.

> if they dont repair it without a receipt

Apple no longer requires receipts in most instances. The only time it matters is if you purchased hardware long after it was manufactured as the warranty is based on purchase date, not manufacture date. As long as you are within a year of the manufacture date, no receipt is needed.

> HP fixed my laptop a few years ago and i had no receipt

HP proof of purchase requirements are identical to Apple.

> and the reason it broke was it was in my backpack and i slammed it down too hard, and it cracked the screen a blew out the blacklight?

Customer abuse to hardware is not covered under Apple or HP warranties. If the hardware breakes because it was put together incorrectly, warranty. If the hardware fails because you were abusive, not warranty.

> They fixed it no questions asked, had it back in a week

You got very lucky. They probably could not tell that it had been abused rather than a normal failure. Had the screen cracked, they probably would have laughed at you instead.

Yeah, I already mentioned that I tried switching headphones. More often than not, I use the iPod ones as they are more compact for skating and such, but when at home I use my Sony MDR-V700's and same thing....only one headphone plays unless the plug is out the right amount. I'm going to go and see what future shop can do about it. And if they say anything that they can't...I'll raise my voice at LEAST 2 dB.

I had the same problem with my creative labs zen. I had to open up the unit myself and solder a couple points where the headphone jack connected. This voided my warranty, but it I think it was up anyways. It was actually a pretty simple fix for me. The problem was apparently rather common for my model and there were walkthrough pictorials available on how to fix it. I'd check ipods website and do a search through their forums to see if other people are having the same problem and what their doing.

The iPod nano is a quite a tiny piece of technology and I imagine it to be very fragile. Personally, I'd try to get it fixed out of my warranty first and I can use that as a last resort. Thanks!

Apple won't cover that under warranty and will charge you as much as a new iPod for off-warranty repair.

You can try one of the many third-party iPod repair outfits that have spring up to fill the iPod repair niche. I had good luck with these guys:

http://www.ipodresq.com/menu.php

and no, I don't use an iPod any more. My old one is in the junk box in the garage. Now I have an iRiver H340:thumbup:

No that didn't happen to my iPod. Some guy mentioneded that happened to his laptop and it was still covered under warranty by HP. I'll try my luck with the warranty, if not i'll use the resq link.
