IPOD vs. Creative Zen
    #4585392 - 08/26/05 10:27 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Alright, so im looking for a large capacity mp3 player, with highquality recording quality, good battery life, compact, durable, servicable/adaptable and with options...

The ease of use, and voice recorder are the most important..

the Zen seems to be about 150 dollars cheaper and has a built in voice recorder..

Suggestions?

the Zen would be better if you want more bang for your buck...It's got alot longer battery life than Ipod's...alot more durable, my Ipod always fucks up, often...

Iv'e got both and I think the Zen is alot better in many aspects...

Of course if your into fashion or ergonomics, that's about all the Ipod's got going for it. You can find another Mp3 player that has just as many functions or more.

I'd buy more apple products if they would just lower their prices to their competitors. But I guess that's how their still in business...

Yeah, i was pretty baffled when i saw the Zen in a flier. So cheap in comparison.

Can you vouch for the audio quality of the recording/mic? And how about hooking it up to speakers? Does it come with headphones, if so how are they?

Mine doesn't have the mic on it, but check and see what quality KHz and format it does record at and compare it to other Mp3 players...

Mine has worked fine hooking into speakers...Speakers work the same way as headphones, all it does is amplify the sound more...This would probably be more dependent on the speaker...

Well usually any speaker that's offered free with the product sucks...Go ahead and buy one the more top of the line headphones if you want better sound quality

I have a friend who knows all about this stuff and he tells me the iRiver players are the best. According to him, they have better sound quality than an ipod, no copy protection, and you can store any filetype on them, so they can be used just like a regular usb hard drive. So you may want to look into that one as well. I don't know if Creative has those advantages or not.

But if you go with Creative, you might be interested to know they sell discounted factory refurbs on ebay, like this one. I had a good experience buying an audigy sound card that way.

wow, the iRiver looks interesting... expensive. I wonder if i could get one around here.

I can get a New Creative Zen for 250 Canadian.. + taxes but i think that works out reasonably close, or a bit cheaper.

actually thats a Zen xtra..

What would i expect to pay for duty charges (shipping to Canada) and it doesnt mention it has a voice recorder... but it says it builds on all the features of the zen.

Hmm.

That was just the first thing I found searching. Click "view other items from this seller" or whatever and you'll see pretty much every product Creative makes.

Creative Zen micro blows away Ipod with the features.
It even includes a FM receiver so you can listen to the radio and
you can upload your email from you pc to it.

I just wanted an mp3 player, so I got an IPOD. I got all my homework on on the ipod too, notes, etc. I bought it used too, lol. Still works, dropped it, always leave it in the car when its hot, still bumping.

iriver h3 series (h320/h340) are amazing players  probably the best out there. the series has been discontinued, however. I highly recommend buying one before they are even more rare. check out the reviews/specs:

oh, the http://www.rockbox.org project is developing the h3xx firmware as we speak, so it will only get better.

The Zen Touch is pretty good, it has a customizable equalizer, I hook it up to some creative computer speakers and it sounds real good. It's not the greatest if your looking to record music from alot of different sources.

The I river has alot of audio in's, and stuff, super compatabile with most standard audio formats.

do you have any idea why they discontinued making them?

its very expensive but i think it's worth the money... though i'd rather have a 60GB iriver (i'm not sure 40 gigs are enough for me)

yeah, they discontinued the h3xx series in favor of the h10 series (which are bullshit - not recommended). the predecessor to the h3xx was the h1xx series which was an awsome player - used & highly praised by those who are into recording shows (you could hook it up to a nice mic & the player would record as .wav). These players are pretty hard to find, but you might find one on ebay every once in awhile.

I do recommend the h3xx series - iriver is still putting out firmware for it (the latest is the 1.28 korea - which has great battery life & plays video & has the clock re-enabled). I'm not worried about the series being discontinued because the player requires no software to run - you just drag/drop the files onto it + the latest firmware works perfectly. pricey, yup, but worth it if you're a music geek who doesnt want to fiddle with software or drivers and wants a pocket digital player that does everything (video, .ogg, recording, line in/out, text reader, picture viewer, skins, long battery life, and extensive setting options)

check out http://www.misticriver.net

oh, there arent any 60gb iriver players - at least to my knowledge. actually, I read on the misticriver forums there is a tek on how to install a higher size harddrive into the player, but the player requires a certain type of harddrive & the ones available are expensive...

this reminds me - I need to run to radio shack & pick up a new cable so I can hook my h340 up to my stereo...

thanks... actualy i can get the 40GB iriver over here (at least least two weeks ago when i checked at the store) and i have to say i'm VERY tempted! only thing is it's price and the fact that in the long run i'd like an even bigger player
right now i have about 30gigs of mp3's and i want to take them with me when i leave for a LONG trip (at least 6-8 months) sometime soon
i'll probably get some more music along the way and i'm not sure 10 gigs will be enough (god i still remember those big ass 350k diskkets or was it 175k?) what can i say i'm a fiend

BTW the price at the store was 2100 NIS which are 466 USD!!!
thats like a one way ticket to canada from here...

i thought it would be wise to wait for the next generation players which undoutebly will get better but for some reason they decided to take off the big ones which i simply don't understand

5 years from now we'll be able to get a 120GB iriver with an intrnal camera, avi playback, GPS and tv reception ontop of everything alse
(and by then i won't have to worry about the cost hopfully)

damn - that's expensive. I purchased mine for $380 or so, but I had $200 in gift certificates collected that my family gave me. I'm sure you can find a better deal online.

yeah i guess i might but i'd have to get an international credit card first (though that's on my list of things to do anyway...)
and i'm not sure if i won't get taxed on it...

20 gig rocbox $140 I got it for, cheap as hell on ebay

www.roc-digital.com

only problem is no car power adapter. You have to either A build one, B find one, or C use a power inverter for the plug to cig.

Also any moron that needs the FM modulator is stupid, since most decks have a AUX input. You can buy a deck with a aux input for >$100 as well.
