DVD to ipod converter

I have a video ipod and I want to put some DVDs on it. I found a program called cucusoft that can convert DVDs straight to ipod format(.mov). Are there any better programs out there? Free? I want to know before I sped $40 on a program just for ipod.

Edit: Or is it a MP4 that is used on ipod. I forget.

The free(est) and in my opinion best(est) method of dvd extraction to .mp4 file is a combination of DVD Decrypter and Videora iPod Converter.
The problem is that this method has a bit of a learning curve...
