I just hung out with a homeless man for 12+ hours * 3
    #16253428 -

It was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life...

He was a great person at heart, loyal to his friends, and most of all I just had a really great time.

Anyone here spent some time with someone from another social sphere?  something that really opened your eyes?

I once made acquaintances with a homeless woman. The problem was she is homeless by choice. it was 40 degrees outside, i picked her up, im my head i saw an old lady walking in the cold. My wife agreed we should help.
Turns out she left her shelter, because the didn't serve alcohol. She asked me if i would get her some beer. i told her sure but only after i saw her eat a sub i had just gotten..
i stopped by my home, got her my BEST jacket. (unisex)
by then she had eaten the sub. i got her the beer, ( 4 pack ) gave her the jacket, and asked if she could chug the beer before we took her back to the shelter. she told me she wasn't going back and would sleep in the woods.

I put her on a bench, told her I would  go home and get some rum, and to wait there.
I got home and called the pokies, told them there was a homeless woman, very cold, sitting on a bench drinking a 4 pack

I was right, they were nice enough to take her into county for 1 night, out of the cold, she ate 3 m ore meals. No charges filed.
The officer later wrote in the newspaper about how a homeless lady stated that a young man had fed her a sub and gave her a jacket. probrally saving her from a very cold death.

A month later there was another cold snap. She was in the news the next day, apparently her heart stopped overnight, in her sleep.

I made  memorial right near the bench where I had left her before. it was touching. such a sweet lady.

Our city and other anonymous donors contributed enough to bury her properly. At her funeral, half of my small town came. to pay respect for a complete stranger.

Me, I DIDNT GO... SHE LIVES ON EVERYTIME I SEE A LESS FOURTUNATE SOUL.
so to me, she still lives.

nwlight, i had never been given a reason to share my story before, and you gave me one.
I thank you.

In my neck of the woods there are rarely any "cool" homeless people. All the ones I've met(hundreds) have all been the classic deranged drug addicts that begin every conversation either outright asking for money or telling me some long scripted sob story about why I should give them money.

Just the other day we were having a funeral memorial for my friend. A homeless lady starting asking people smoking cigarettes outside for money and everyone told her to keep walking. She then came inside the joint and was about to hit up a grieving brother (who is so nice he probably would have given money to her) but I had to forcefully remove her from the place before that happened making as minimal a scene as I could.

I'm sure there are cool homeless people... but they generally aren't the ones pestering people for money. I've only seen ran into the self entitled meth/crack/heroin addicts.

I've worked a lot with a grassroots organization called Food Not Bombs (I can guarentee there is a chapter in your city!)

Anyways, I've met a plethora of deep, interesting, amazing, and funny homeless people. Some of them were so interesting and fun that it would make my week just to go out and talk to them. Very insightful.

This one time when I was younger, I was alone in NYC and 2 crooks chased me into central park. This nice homeless woman saved me by unleashing dozens of pidgeons on the crooks, scaring them off. Later that week she took me to the roof top of the New York Symphony where we watche the show from this indescribable view. I bought her a hot chocolate.

Later, I bought her a christmas ornament and gave it to her on Christmas morning. It was 2 white doves. I gave her one and I kept one. I told her that every time I look at this I will remember her.

The only homeless people i've met are homeless by choice, in which case i have no respect for them when they ask for money or anything else. Nothing is worse than seeing some street kid that thinks they are so enlightened asking me for money because i've got a job. I wish they would criminalize homelessness. They offer nothing to society. They act as leeches and they make cities look bad.

When I was in jail for 6 months I was forced to hangout with people that I would never place myself around.
Loud mouths, gangsters, wiggers, idiots, pedophiles, rapists, homeless people, addicts, gays etc

It sucked ass. I did meet one kid that liked the same music as me and knew some of the same people I did on the outside, we hangout the entire time we were locked up. Both of us went to court on the same day and got sentenced to the same amount of time and were placed in the same block. So he pretty much kept me sane

Correct me if I've got this wrong. Instead of them living on voluntary donations from people as they do now, you think it would make more sense to jail them and pay people to guard them with everyone's tax money?

you start arresting homeless people and suddenly there are less of them in your area. a great way to ruin a nice city/town is a homeless problem. if people are choosing to be homeless they should be jailed. no one likes a bunch of addicted bums begging for money.

and do the person who said i value money above all else, i don't. i value the places I live and i hate seeing the places i live become unsafe with a bunch of homeless people all over. they don't create or generate anything of value to society. all they do is consume. they are the worst form of capitalist scum.

What happens in America if there's like a decent looking guy in his late 20s who's starving to death because he's homeless and he's not able to panhandle enough? Do people just pass by him day by day until he's a corpse? I'm just wondering.

Can't tell if trolling

^pretty much says it all right there

@newgui, big ups on working with food not bombs, I've always been interested in volunteering for them, can i ask how you got into contact with them and what your experience was like?

:vegan:

also, I have no problem whatsoever with the homeless, even if they've "chosen" such a life and even if they sit around begging for money all day. spangers don't bother me one bit as long as they aren't aggressive or confrontational in their methods. they aren't harming me or anyone else that i can see

And, all of a sudden everyone collectively is paying a large amount of money for full time staff to make sure they don't escape, instead of having the option to just walk by and not give them anything. Even welfare is a lot cheaper than keeping someone in prison.

No welfare, no prison.  Nothing from the government.
