putting hard copys of movies onto a HD

is it possible to do this?  I want to get rid of all of my dvd's i have laying around and put them all onto a external HD.  Would it be possible to somehow put the info from the physical disk onto a HD?

Yes, what you want is a dvd ripping program. If you want to just rip everything off the disc without quality loss, you can use something like dvd decrypter. If you don't have that much hard drive space, you can use a program that recompresses the video to take up less space at the expense of quality, for example Handbrake.

awesome! thanks bud. i have a 1 TB external so id like to keep the quality if i could. is dvd decrypter a program i can download?

i have convert x to dvd but i use that to take files ive dl'd and making them into dvd's

Yeah both the programs I mentioned are free to download. Without compression the movies will be something like 4-9GB each, doable on a 1 TB if you're talking about say a few dozen to a hundred movies. With recompression you can get them looking pretty decent at 700-1500 MB.

i downloaded handbrake and i am just going to compress them.  does it automatically compress them for you?

You have to put in a few settings as I recall, there should be guides online if it's not self-explanatory. I haven't used it too much really but it seemed to work well when I used it in the past.

Honestly, it would be much faster and easier to just download them already ripped by people who know the settings.

That's a good point. You can also get much higher quality copies that way by downloading blu-ray rips.

i figured it out. the quality isn't bad at all.  i think this would be easier then to download all the movies i have on disk again.  it takes aboot 20 mins a movie.
