put it one a timer. or perhaps the humidifier has a lower setting.(i doubt that... that's too obvious). the other two options map be less agreeable for you... move the cakes to a larger terrarium, or don't use that humidifier. you are probably right about the hydrometer being correct, it's doubtfull it would be calibrated to a specific range, if it were, it would most likly read BELOW the actually humidty, and since it read 99.9$, you can be reasonably sure about it being accurate, as lond as you don't think it is in anyway damaged.

use a few condensation bottles. in line connected by hoses... use two liters. the first hose from the mouth of the humidifier to the top of the first bottle the secound hose to the bottom of the first bottle to the top of the next repeat untill the humidity is desired. useally takes three bottles. keep in mind that all hoses must be at an angle so no watter collects in a sag. use grommets on the two liter bottles they are at home depot in the electrical section or at pepboys. heat up a big fat bolt to poke holes in the bottles. its easer then trying to cut a perfect circle with an exacto knife.

Thanks everybody. I'm using the humidifier on two huge terrariums, so that's not the problem. I think I'm going to try the soda bottles.------------------ Baldy

If you are handy and electronically enclined, it is easy to modify your humidifier to reduced output. Two methods are possible, although I prefer the latter. First is that you remove the case (4 screws in bottom usually). You will see the controls (pots) that you adjust for volume and humidity). What you want to do is locate the wiring at the rear of the pots and disconnect the wire from the return leg of the pot. Now solder a resistor in series with the cut connection and you now have reduced output. My preffered method is to get a 10K ohms or less pot and solder it in series with the cut connection. This now offers a second controll that will take the lowest setting possible before and lower it for more precise control. If you wanted to get fancy you would do this for both humidity and volume and you'd have control right for any conditions. I have done this to two units and they have worked fine for years now, running them lower actually seems to prolong the life of the transducer. This method avoids bottles and extra equipment which I find to be a bit of a pain. If someone wants more info I can take a few pics of it, it's not too difficult.

Dirtydog, are you talking about an ultrasonic or a cool mist humidifier? I have a cool mist made by Kaz. If its the cool mist then I would love to see pics of the modifications. It sounds like you have an ultrasonic humidifier. Let me know. Thanks.------------------ Baldy
