Your spore print is purple not black and the mushroom is most likely Deconica or Stropharia.

Stropharia semiglobata.

My apologies for the spore print color though, I'm still relatively new to this so it's difficult for me to distinguish

I usually have a ton of trouble differentiating purple and black. It is very obvious on the apex of the stipe in your last photo.

Stropharia semiglobata is a group, see this.

S. dorsipora has been found in CA, I have no idea yet how common S. semiglobata or other species in the group would be here.

It wasn't that easy to spot I only noticed because I zoomed right in on your photo.

As Gravija said, great ID request.

Wow, thanks Byrain! So... dung loving, glabrous capped, glutinous stiped Stropharia generally belong in a 'yet to be described' genus? Where can I read more about The Stercophila group?

Here is one I found that TimmiT the wizard ID'd for me. It had a crazy amount of slime on it, like a really thick coating.

Be honest, you guys have dinosaurs and shit over there. I wouldn't touch that ID with a 10' pole!

Dude, the macro pics of the slime are crazy good! Are you using a 100 mm lens?

I'm a little confused? Is it an S. dorsipora, or does it have no genus?

It may be. For now you can call It semiglobata and sleep easy, IMO.

Yup Canon 100mm ef 2.8.  I still have a lot to learn with photography, I get a little bit better each mushroom season, but that's the only time I really take a lot of photos.

I've been debating saving some money and getting a tamron instead. I think your pic just settled that little debate!

Yeah I think I actually paid more for the lens than my camera cost, it suits my needs perfectly though, the vast majority of my photos are of mushrooms.  I am keen to start trying my hand at a wider variety of photography though.

If you look through my gallery you'll find a fair few macro shots taken with that lens, and my newb skills probably only show half of what it can do.
