Staving off underage posters during registration
    #16128112 -

The thread in the Vet Lounge and a few others have had me thinking.

Granted, I haven't registered an account in quite some time, but here goes anyway.

Is there any way to nip underage users in the bud during registration?

If someone sees: "You must be 18 to register. Enter your birthdate below." then underage users are going to falsify his or her birthday after seeing that.

If user is < 18 years, then just instant IP permaban with: "Sorry, we cannot proceed. You must be 18 years of age or older to register. Please return in xxx days. Please refer to our Terms of Use."

Just an idea, I've no clue how registration works, but figured I'd put it out there.

With everything going down across various other websites, there's gotta be a way to snag underage users during registration.

I don't know the legality or how prominent the 18 or older part must be, but can you see what I'm getting at?

Edit: Also, is there a way to scan through birthdays of users and just ban them en masse if their birthday is under the age of 18?

Just to note,

This isn't for a vendetta or to make a dick move.

Something for the security of the website as a whole.

There just isn't any good way to verify age but maintain anonymity. A while back I took a couple days to work on this, and now we pretty much do everything we can without performing an actual identity check like when you get a credit card (ie. require a name and social security number, and verify with questions like "which of these was a former address?", "which of these cars is registered to you?", etc.) That would be prohibitively expensive for us, and no prospective members would put up with it. Also it wouldn't work for international visitors. Really, if an underage user is determined to register, there's only so much we can do to stop them. We block a lot of attempts, but kids aren't stupid and I'm sure plenty others get through. If they break the rules, admit their age, or their parents contact us, they'll end up banned. If none of that happens, I'm still against it, but it doesn't seem to be as pressing of an issue. I wish there was more we could do, but it is what it is. Better than requiring a government ID number before you're allowed on the internet.

TBH, and I know the number of years someone's been alive is so very important for legal issues which may or may not have any bearing on reality, but there's lots of posters who whilst they may be chronologically over 18, they aint when it comes to mental faculties.

Maybe they could ask trivia questions during the regristration, questions someone under the age of 18 wouldnt know the awnser too, and if they awnser wrong, IP permaban. But if they are 18 and over then they should know and awnser correctly. However it sounds tricky to try and tune this in a way that would be able to work properly.

I'm afraid that idea would never work and they could just look it up as well as a few 18+ getting banned.

There really isn't much of a way around it, as Ythan said.

Yeah because kids are dumb and won't google the answer...

Kids are smart. Worse than that they have a lot of time on their hands because they don't have to work for a living. You will not outsmart kids.

I also don't like the idea of IP bans. unless you have a static IP address they don't work. It's because of a roving IP ban that I once got a message from Wikipedia about defacing Grady Sizemore's page. I realized it's because it was my IP matched the defacer's for a while.
