Tutorial Mandatory for Registration

There should be a tutorial required for registration to the forums. There should also be one for each individual forum that goes over the rules. These tutorials should be timed so that the user is forced to read... I know some people with tabbed browsing will do other things instead, but those people are already smart enough to figure this shit out....

I'm curious how the OTD test would be.
Probably one of those 'which pic is not like the other'

Recently we've made a few changes to cut down on repetitive newbie posts. The mods of the most affected forums came up with comprehensive stickies to address common questions. We reinstituted the splash screen for new users. Also, before a new user's post is accepted they are shown a list of related threads in case their question has been answered. As I understand it these changes have already had a positive effect on the problem without throwing up a big brick wall to new members.

Sounds like that is a good idea... I wasn't aware of the splash screen since I am one of the only people here who have never made another account...

I think a test would be a good idea.
Cult also needs to be split, it's just too high volume and covers too large of a subject area. Eliminate one of the several low-volume non-mushroom related forums if need be.
I would suggest combining "Philosophy & Spirituality" and "Mysticism, Religion, & the Paranormal". Because the only thing worse than a low-volume, non-mushroom related forum on a mushroom site... Is having TWO of them on the EXACT SAME subject.
Philosophy ~= Spirituality = Religion = Mysticism = the Paranormal
Do you see the logic in that?

"Mysticism, Religion, & the Paranormal" only averages .5 threads per day. Who's going to miss it?
Did they actually try combining them at one point?
We need to start a dialog and heal that deep and bitter divide between religion and spirituality. If we can do that then there must be some hope of bringing the paranormalists and spiritual philosophers together. With those factions combined I'm sure we can overcome the rigid dogma and isolationism of the "mystics". Let the healing begin.

regarding O.D.D
if there is a splash screen there, please ensure there's plenty of stress on the "no sources" and "no dose advice/recommendations" rules... Looking after those threads are largely clerical and people get angry when their post is relegated to the dump and their records dinged with a warning.
36pt font would be appropriate for those two rules

There's no automated way to do it, but you can ask in Rono's thread.
For your reference, you have none.

Doesn't it send a PM to the offender when one receives an official warning?
I seem to remember getting something like that a long time ago when I posted something stupid.

Yes, it does. Or if you're banned from the whole board it sends an e-mail. However if you delete that or don't get it, like blinkidiot says there's no way to manually check your own history. This may be changed in the future.

LOL. It used to be "Spirituality and Philosophy", and was split into two forums due to popular request because of the very reasons you state. Mostly due to the cold and calculated dissections from the "skeptics" tearing into the "believers" spiritual ruminations, which turned into a one-sided war of sorts. But I agree, maybe it's time to merge them back together.
As for registrations.. we do need a test. Make it a pain in the ass to register

Screw that, man, people have dicked around with P&S far too much. We've been given what we want, and let's leave it at that, eh?
 Peace.

Who is "pissed" about it? Those who wanted to discuss their spiritual musings without being questioned have a safe space. The fact that there is rarely anyone posting there indicates that the outraged group who demanded the split may have been abducted by aliens.
Those who wish to debate freely, deeply examine the basis of their professed philosophy, and interact in a fairly unrestricted manner (barring flames) now have a forum sans offended mystics.
Seems like a good arrangement to me. Why do you think that anyone is upset about it besides you? And why are you upset about it?

> Who is "pissed" about it?
Oh come on now. Don't play dumb. You're trying to pretend like the problem doesn't exist and that everyone's happy.
The philosophers are pissed at the paranormalists, the spiritualists are upset with the sectarians, and the mystics are practically at the spiritual philosophers throats.
What you've done is cast out all the views you don't like and thrown them into a reject forum that's on the same topic, but is just created for the minority that you don't like. That isn't fair to *anyone*. If you don't like a little debate then you should be posting on a forum dedicated specifically to your own spiritual views.
It's philosophically wrong to create artificial distinctions just to separate out the people and views that you don't like.
If they let you get away with such foolishness then I think cult should be split into separate forums for WBS, BRF, grains, and POO. Even that wouldn't be as bad as the split between "Philosophy & Spirituality" and "Mysticism, Religion, & the Paranormal". To equal that level of artificial factionalism we would have to split cult into a separate forum for each strain.
Also did you ever think that the division exists solely because of it being continually enforced by exclusionists like you?

Do a little research before you jump to conclusions about why the split occurred & why many of us believe it is still warranted.

I'm not so much concerned about why it happened as I am about why it is continuing.
Why can't a peace be made? Why can't P&S accept back a member of their topic?
You're right I don't know your personal beliefs but from what I do know it seems that you're a divisive, elitist separatist. And this whole thing smacks of religious bigotry.

This was never about topics, but about the manner in which topics were to be discussed. Those who claimed their spirituality was being crushed by skeptical responses were the ones who wanted a forum split. The discussion of religion is alive and well in P&S, as anyone who views the forum can tell you.
I do not wish to exclude those who disagree with my beliefs, and have never sought to do so. I supported the split because the apparent alternative was to eliminate debates entirely, and because the "offended" parties requested the split.
You have misunderstood the issues surrounding the split, and misidentified the reasons for the MR&P forum.

Attacking the premise was supported as an integral part of philosophy whereas in the other forum it wasn't. Does that make the division clear?

OK I think I have the perfect solution.
We can combine philosophy with politics, activism, and law. Then combine spirituality with "Mysticism, Religion, & the Paranormal".
Spirituality is religion (agnosticism if nothing else) so that fits perfectly. And philosophy can't stand on it's own since you have to be philosophizing about something.
You can't just philosophize about philosophy can you? That doesn't seem to make any sense to me.
If you could just tack "philosophy" onto something else to make it worthy of it's own topic then we would have to do that with a lot of forums, like "mushroom hunting philosophy" and "contamination philosophy".
So what do you guys thing of my solution? It seems pretty ideal to me!

No, but from what I've seen it's happening fairly frequently. It seems to happen to people with not that many posts (kind of in the "noob" status) when they use "quotes" who are also using firefox. I've suggested it's a firefox bug, but as you can expect, people don't like that suggestion very much. It might or might not be related to any or all of those circumstances, but that's what I've gathered. Very odd bug.
Good luck trouble shooting that, I don't envy you.
