Shredded Coconut Husks can ruin EVERYTHING!

I know many of you more experienced people on here are well aware of this fact, I just hope others who do not know this little bit of information happen to stumble upon this thread.

BUYER BEWARE
Shredded coconut husks bought from your local gardening store or hydroponics store may be fortified with trichoderma spores because it is beneficial in plant growth as it fights off other fungus and bacteria and help promote healthy root systems. In the mushroom world, trich is one of your worst enemies. Left unchecked it can ruin everything.

Just having a bag of said shredded coconut husks open in my room cost me 12 BRF cakes, a monotub, and some trays. What I'm going to have to do to get my space/room free of this is going to be a hassle in itself, aside from losing all I have lost so far.

Be smart, buy coir online or from your local pet store. Its the same price if not cheaper, and its been tried tested and true. Don't make the same mistake I have. If you have this product already, read the label; somewhere it will tell you if it contains trich, and chances are, it does.

Good point.

Coir that has been fortified with mycorrhizal fungi is always listed, so just check the coir before you buy.  My local hydro-store sells great coir.

This is why we pasteurize.. You can bet normal coir contains trich too.

You misunderstand, I pasteurize as well, and my jars I PC for 90 minutes at 15psi. Reason I lost my cakes is because the coconut husks I have are fortified (purposely added, has lots of) with trich spores. Through fanning and misting my cakes in the SGFC I enabled the spores to become airborne and the rest.. is history as they say :frown:

I'm simply saying watch out for these kinds of products and always follow proper sterile procedures.

No, I understand completely. And I can tell you from experience that fanning your cakes did not infect them with trich, once your sub is 100% fresh air is what keeps them from contaminating. If they contaminated from the reasons you sated, they didn't have enough air exchange in the first place, or were not completely colonized.

I'm not saying to go buy the coir with extra trich, I'm saying that it didn't necessarily cause your problem.

How many times have you successfully grown mushrooms?

everything contains trich spores almost its everywhere even in bread, my guess its not actually fortified as in they didn't harvest trich and the spores to add to it, its just simply there they know it and sell with a "Now with more trich!" sticker or what have you.

its just a sale gimmick if you pasteurized correctly it doesn't matter.

This is only my second grow, and mind you it has been some time since I done this and my old tek was using large trays I inoculated with spawn. I do firmly believe this was my problem though. Your welcome to check my journal to see the timeline and downfall of my BRF cakes. Mind you I did over exaggerate my loses just to try to make my point, I apologize for blowing that out of proportion. The room they are in gets plenty of fresh air and its a standard SGFC.

The bag of the coconut husks is resting not 5ft away from the SGFC as well, which is what brought me to believe it was my downfall. I should say WAS resting, as I have gave it away to someone for gardening.
