coco-coir = coconut bark?
    #1194475 - 01/06/03 02:06 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Ok I see people raving about coco-coir. I'm thinking of giving it a shot. I went to the petshop yesterday to look for it and what I found was chipped coconut bark. Is this what I want? I for some reason thought coco-coir was long hairlike stuff.

No, coconut bark is NOT coco coir. Look for Bed-A-Beast, that is the big brand name at most pet stores. It looks like a brown brick. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link that was very helpful. Glad I didn't buy the wrong stuff. The chipped bark was $9 for a small brick too.
Ok once I find this stuff what ratio to verm should I use. And do you let it expand first then measure the amount?

What false information? The original poster asked if coir was made of coconut bark. It is not. It is made of coconut HUSK, which is an entirely different thing.

If you decide to case with coconut bark be sure to post your results.

I prefer not to use vermiculite when I case with coir, it is not needed. Coir retains water very well. The only thing I add to my casing material is oyster shell.

brand names in the Pet Stores are :

I like using a 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir casing.
