shiitake popcorning and starting to brown in jars, can I still spawn?

Hi all,

I have some shiitake jars that I wasn't able to spawn in a timely fashion because I've been busy with school. They're starting to popcorn in the jars and brown just a little bit on the top, so I've moved them to the fridge to slow them down. Would I still be able to use these to spawn to sawdust bags?

You could but the problem will be mixing the grain into sawdust. It needs to be spread uniformly and with overgrown myc like yours it will be very difficult to achieve a thorough mixing.

Thanks for the reply. Will it be too thick to break up with my hands into small pieces? (Sorry if this is a dumb question, it's my first time working with shiitake)

You can give it a try but you will have nearly 100% contamination rates if you touch it with your hand.
