Starting Shitake from syringe?

I have a syringe of shitake mycelium. What medium should I use to get it started?
You think popcorn would work? Maybe start on popcorn, then spawn to sawdust, or wooden dowels?

Im doing some dowels at the moment have you seen my grow log? Any tips or comments will be good. If i had a mycelium syringe i would inoculate grain with half and dowels with the other. Then put the grain to sawdust blocks or bags and the dowels to logs if you have outdoor space. I only started dowels so i better get some millet going as well cos some one just dropped of more oak than i have dowels for so ill need them all.

Inoculate several jarsof birseed, grass seed, or rye, or your other favorite grain spawn. if you have sterile conditions inoculate some petri plates too. Then you can use the spawm to do sawdust blocks, or dowels or whatever. You can really stretch your syringe that way.

I think I'll try it on popcorn first, then start some peroxidated agar plates, and sawdust/dowels with that.
I'll be using Potato (flakes) Fructose Agar.
I found this in the health food section at the local grocery store:

Frutose is a monoglyceride like dextrose, so it should work.

Wouldn't it be easier to simply cook a few patatoes?

I don't plan on PCing the agar, so I'm using flakes since they don't seem to contain live peroxidase which would break down the peroxide.

I just got 100 dowels from Fungi Perfecti and want to know if I have to soak the logs can I innoculate bags of sawdust with some?. and for how long . How can I maximize the output - sawdust, spawn, logs etc . what can i use to seal the logs?

I would go ahead and sterilize at least one quart jar of grain and drop a dowel in there. It should colonize and you can use the colonized grain to inoculate more grain jars significantly stretching your dowels. As far as how many to put in a log I would put 25 to 50 dowels per 4-5 ft long log section. The log should be betweent 4-6 inches in diameter

i'd use 3-4 to ensure colonization, shiitake isn't very fast.

I put a 4-5 drops of mycelium water on some sterileized grey cardboard disks last night.
We'll see how they do.
