How can I get started? Complete Newbie.
    #1442114 - 04/09/03 09:02 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Okay, I can grow hallucinogenic mushrooms quite easily. Problem is, I don't really eat them, I just grow them for fun.

It would be great to grow something I could actually eat without going to the moon and back afterwards.

I've been searching for a simple tek that would allow me to grow edible mushrooms, but I can't find one anywhere. I can find heaps of teks, but no simple ones.

I can't think of where on earth I'd get any agar, by the way. Is that needed for all gourmet mushroom growing?

It seems edible mushroom growing is actually much harder than growing Psilocybe Cubensis.

Surely there's something for edible mushrooms that's no more complex than a simple Cubensis PF-Tek?

Any advice/links etc. more than welcome.

Well if you can grow psylos that you can grow many edibles. Oysters are especially easy. Check the interenet. Get a book. Have fun.

oysters are easy, i think you can grow them off cakes.

i saw a pic on mycoteks website of an enormous cake in a hydropod sprouting some oysters..

Oysters are a hardwood lover, so it doesn't look good for the rice cakes
The easiest Oyster tech I know is this, but you need to buy some big zip locs or NARA patch bags (old bread sacks may work - I just haven't tried 'em yet):
1) Boil water hard for 10 minutes or so
2) Place new, unscented, "always save" (i.e. cheap/plain) roll on drain rack over sink; pour boiling water slowly over the roll until it is completely saturated, especially the carboard core.
3) When it cools completely, place roll in a bag and fill the core of the roll with grain spawn.
4) Close the top of the bag, twist, rubber band and let colonize for 2-3 weeks in the dark
5) Pop in the fridge for 48 hours to start fruiting - they fruit all at once and you are picking within 7 days of chilling.
6) Take 'em out, open the top of the bag so they can et air exchange and fruit, back to dark for 2 weeks and go again -
Oh yeah - "Mist as needed" - they can get leathery looking and dry
If you can't make spawn you can get oyster spawn from mushroompeople, or I can add you a little in next time I make some up....
PM me for other help if you need it with this tech

You will basically only need to be able to generate grain spawn.

A good method for those who lack serious resources is...

take 1 cup hot tap water (hot as your tap goes), add 25cc's of peroxide to it.

pour this into 2 cups of INSTANT brown rice - not white rice, must be brown.

let this soak for about 5 minutes until the rice has soaked up the water

spoon the rice into a quart jar, I would add a little bit of gypsum. maybe a gram to this mixture.

Then you boil this jar attached with a filter disk, for about 10 minutes. Allow it to cool, innoculate with an agar wedge or mycellium syringe (sporeworks sells them) (agar is available from a few shroomery vendors). You cannot use spores in this mixture, as they will not germinate.

This will colonize, and you can innoculate straw for oysters, or toilet paper.. whatever your heart desires.
