I've had 3 in ear headphones crapping out on me, always the left one too. 80$ might not buy you the best quality, but 80$ is still a lot of money for a product that doesn't last 6 months.

I bought some AKG over the ear kind two years ago and never had a problem yet.

unfortunately iem break easily, that's just the way it is.  a lot of the time it's the cables, from not winding them properly.

Those look pretty cheap.  I have a pair of Sennheiser 280HDs that have lasted 3 years and a pair of Audio Technica ath-m50s for about 5 months.  I beat the SHIT out of them.  No carrying case, I crush them in my backpack daily, bla bla.  They both are handling it well.  The ATs sound 10 times better than the Sennheisers.  I think they are really the best in the price range.

No doubt. The Audio Technicas are one of the best-kept secrets of the high-end headphone world. I'd put them up against headphones that cost twice as much. Awesome, awesome, AWESOME cans, with three caveats -

- they need around seventy hours of burn-in to really shine, although most of the improvement occurs in the first ten to twenty hours

- If you've got a fat head (like me) they can begin to feel a little clampy after a couple of hours. Not exactly painful, but definitely hard to ignore.

- for iPods and such, a headphone amp is recommended if you like to crank it up to ear-bleeding volumes.

But if you can afford these babies, you will never regret the purchase. I can't say enough good things about them. True audiophile quality at a bargain price. They are often available for as little as $150 at Amazon and other online vendors.

Would headphones like that be a good product even for a 'normal user' who listen to 128-320kbps on an iphone or it is mostly for studio use with FLAC files or similar quality files?

They're going to make music from any source sound way better, however sometimes really analytic headphones can make your more aware of crappy mixing, production, etc.

Had a pair of sennheiser Hd595s for a few years now, and not let me down at all.

But I have to agree that Audio Technicas are really awesome!

Yes. The difference between these phones and others in the same price range or less is immediately apparent no matter what the source material. I find MP3 tunes sound great on these. It is true that FLAC files will sound even better, but FLAC files sound better than MP3 even on cheap-ass phones.

The other thing is, as All We Perceive noted, the build quality is outstanding. These suckers should last a long, long time.

I sold stereo systems for a living back in the day (early Eighties) and Audio Technica even then had a reputation for delivering great sound quality for the buck. Their low-end to mid range turntable cartridges are still considered to be among the very best you can get for the money.

The thing about these phones is that they were designed as studio monitors - they have a dead flat frequency response with no tweaking at all of bass or midrange or highs - they faithfully reproduce whatever is fed to them, so if there are flaws in what is being fed to them, you WILL notice those flaws. If the bass on the recording is flabby or boomy, the phones will give you flabby or boomy bass. If the highs have been boosted to give the song more "zing", your ears will be ringing. These phones hide nothing, and they improve nothing - they just deliver EXACTLY what the producer of the song laid down.

For me, that is just what I want in a headphone. Not everyone feels that way, though.

Right now I listen to a lot of minimal but I think most artists I know are pretty good DJs/producers...
Would the Audio Technica ath-m50s be a safe buy? Thanks

How are you handling and storing the 'phones?  I can't imagine how you would go through headphones so fast if you weren't abusing them somehow.

The ATH-M50 used to be a killer deal before the price went up over the past several years.  Depends on what you like in a headphone.

Yeah it depends on the sound signature you're looking for.  I personally prefer open headphones.  You can check out the frequency response here and compare it to other headphones to.  Once you have more money saved up I would purchase a DAC too.

I don't abuse them -- should I be storing them in something? I just leave them on my desk when I'm not using them. Sometimes I accidentally drop them on the ground.

Yep. A couple years back, you could find these discounted to just over a hundred bucks. That was a truly insane price. But even at $150, there's nothing out there that can touch them, in my opinion, and very few (if any) that can beat them for even double that price. They're not the insanely great bargain they used to be, but they're still a great bargain.

And no, I get no commission from Audi Technica for my comments. I just like telling people about stuff that's actually worth buying. There's so much crap out there these days that finding truly great stuff for a truly great price is an experience rare enough to be savored.

.... the m50s do not compete with k400s for example.  I don't even like the k400s that much but the m50s do not come close to their abilities.  I got my k400s for 100$ too.  Hell, I think the re-262s sound better than m50s and they're in ears.

Everyones taste is different, but I really believe there are much better deals on the market.  AT cans are okay, but you def sound more like a fanboy than an unbiased listener.

I never really misused my in ear headphones. I never had a case for them, they would usually stay in my pocket with the cable in a circle pattern. The AKG over the ear I'm using has been pretty roughed up, but after two years they are still holding up.
What I like in a headphone? Good sound and good quality (tired of cheap ass cables), but I don't need any quality studio ones...

Aye - I doubt these headphones are broken at all - the cable on the otherhand... likely.

also, the point of headphone amps isn't necessarily volume but being properly driven.  My sextetts are 600 ohm and can get plenty loud even being driven by my phone but sound like shit in comparison when I have them going from a proper amp, same volume.

I'd consider keeping them in your pocket without a case abuse.  It's no wonder they stop working after a while.
