Moving to Denver - Advice

Moved to Chicago about a year ago, new job offer might be taking me to Denver.

I havent needed to drive in ages but I think I'd need something for the new job/city. My last two cars were Jeep Wranglers. If I were to get another car I'd like to get a third Wrangler. My thought is though, Denver is such a dry city that I may be able to get away with a motorcycle as my primary vehicle. Thoughts?

I could get a much nicer bike than I could a jeep for the same price and I've been meaning to get another bike since I sold my last one anyway. I just don't know if I could pull it off as my only mode of transport to and from work.

If it matters, I'd be living in LoDo and working in Broomfield. This is the bike I would get, Suzuki V-Strom 650:

Good luck using just a motorcycle in the winter. The winters aren't as bad here as Chicago's by any means though, so you may be able to pull it off.

Honestly, I'd just go with the Jeep though. More versatile all around.

This was my first Chicago winter and it was a fuckin joke.. I've had MUCH colder winters in Philly. :shrug:

I wouldn't be moving out there until almost May anyway.

Also, I believe there is a bus that would take me to work as well but it would just take like 1.5 hrs instead of 30min. My gf has a car as well for the rare instance that I'd need to take a long trip.

Chicago winters can be very cold and very windy, moving from Canada to Chicago - the temperatures and winters were pretty much comparable for the time that I lived in the city. Very cold and snowy.

You guys think I could get away with a bike exclusively for the summer at the very least? If nothing else I could grab some cheap car around Oct/Nov if I really needed it.

If it's at all possible do the bike I'd rather do that. I love driving Jeeps but the bike would be a lot cheaper.

It's doable Frith. I did it two years in a row in central Texas but there were some days in the winter I would have rather not and Texas winters pale in comparison to Colorado winters I'm sure. At the very least invest in some quality foul weather gear. Since you are looking at a dual sport bike as opposed to a crotch rocket it will make it a little easier.

It would probably be fine for summer but I wouldn't push it beyond that.

yeah definitely need to invest in some rain gear and some high visibility stuff as well.

ive been drooling over that bike for ages now. the fact that it is made specifically for long distances and roads which arent exactly in the greatest shape makes it pretty appealing. kinda like the little brother to the BMW GS series (which i would buy if i could afford).

i'd like to do some trail riding/camping with it and be able to ride back and forth to work without much trouble. seems like it would be a good fit.

Is it necessary to have an auto there? I used to live in a city where I could walkto everything. I miss it so much, I want to be somewhere I can be a pedestrian again.

i wouldn't recomend a motorbike as a primary means of transportation. i mean, bikes are fun and all, but they are too dangerous to ride dayly, and when it rains it ruins riding your motorbike. in my opinion , motorbikes are best kept as the ' weekend drive ' so to speak.

yeah unfortunately. i could take public transit (and i would prefer it) but instead of a 30min drive it turns into an hour and a half bus ride. if i lived closer to work it wouldnt really be a big deal but that is not really the situation.

just as many people ride bike all the time who arent killed in horrible accidents. granted, if there is an accident i have no real protection and id be screwed. i always wear high visibility clothing. the bike i mentioned above is MUCH taller than a crotch rocket or cruiser and i would have three large panniers, also with high visibility tape. making yourself look as noticeable as possible goes a long way in keeping yourself safe.

I've ridden a bike before, I know what I'm getting myself into. This was kinda just a question about the weather more than anything..

Most days yes. It will be cold. There will be snow days. At some point you will not be able to use your bike to get where you want to go. If you have back up options you aren't afraid to use then by all means go for it and get some good gear. Just expect to use your alternative means at a moments notice thanks to the weather. A bike would dominate in the summer. Ride the mountain roads. Just don't expect it to dominate in winter.

seriously? where?

there are lots of jeeps out there but everything that i look at is a hell of a lot more expensive than if i was buying it in Jersey (ive had two jeeps already. this would be my third). those fuckers in Denver hold onto them forever.

ive actually considered going back to philly, buying one there, and having it shipped out.
