Re: Buying a laptop for heavy processing. [Re: pwnasaurus]

Well, I bought the laptop today. I read quite a few places that the new Lenovo Thinkpad models have gone down in quality compared to the ones a few years ago.

I ended up getting an HP Envy 15

Here's the specs on the one I got:

• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM (2.2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz
• 1GB AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7690M GDDR5 Discrete Graphics(TM) [HDMI, DP]
• 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• 750GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
• 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
• 15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366x768)
• SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support

That was my initial thought as well, but reading into the Envy series, it looks like they've got an improved build quality.

I chose it over Lenovo for build.

Really? hmm, I mean it is mostly subjective.  Alas, I and my co-partner run asus and have never ran into an issue we could not fix, have never had a glitch doing live gigs, and take both our's into the forest to play shows.

  Maybe I have just run into shitty Hp's  but I have not enjoyed the ones I have used.

And perhaps it is the same for me and asus, I own one personally and its been the most troubled laptops I've ever used for music production  (battery failures, random driver crashes...) my HP is my most stable computer

But as you say such things are often on a case by case basis.

The main selling point for me was:
"HP has taken special care in the design of the system to shield the audio codec
from interference, while providing especially clean (and higher-power) audio output
to the headphone jack"

With the improved audio driver, I won't have to bring a portable usb soundcard with me, so it'll be a lot more convenient to produce on the go.

Thanks!

I can't wait for it to get here. The current desktop I use for producing is terribly old and I'm in desperate need of something new.

That's good to hear.. I've had a fair bit of trouble with noise seeping into my audio outputs on windows systems.

I was trying to get something for a grand or less, but it ended up being 1400 with tax and all.
