Buying a laptop for heavy processing.
    #15791241 -

Was looking at getting a lenovo. Specifically for music production. My cap would be $800, but I customized some pretty good ones for $700 with lots of accessories on them.
If you guys would recommend any other companies, let me know what's up.

Asus....no doubt about it.

Me and my collab both use asus.

We run sends + taxing vst's + nested chains inside ableton and they take it pretty good.

Pretty sturdy case.

Longer hardware life than apple.

Looking at the asus, what model would you specifically recommend?

hmm, that I would have to leave up to you. make sure your screen it big enough (unless you are running extra monitor.

biggest factors for production computer:

CPU = so far the quads respond pretty good to demand

RAM = the more of this, the faster rendering goes, the faster freezing goes, and the smoother you can trigger HD based files.

Video card = boosts both of those

Get something with an i5 or i7 at the least.
No excuse not to and they will massively outperform any older generation core 2 quad or whatever.

Is there a reason you're going for a laptop and not a desktop? You'll be able to fit bigger n better processors in the latter and have some fat heatsinks on it so you wont get that nasty whine as the laptop fan does it's best to keep it's chips cool.

I plan to buy a desktop at a later point. However, currently my job has me traveling a lot, and I'd enjoy being able to work on music on the fly.
Also, I'll be including my laptop in live performances, and it would be a hassle to lug a desktop around to various shows.

Probably one or two more paychecks down the line, I'll be getting myself a desktop though.

Lenovo / IBM have excellent build quality and are solid machines but you'll pay for them. Does it have to be a laptop? If you've got a monitor, $800 will get you a banging build it yourself PC. This won't work if you're wanting to tote it around everywhere, though.

Definitely Lenovo if you can spend the cash, ASUS is the second option for me as far as laptops go.

If I were building a computer, ASUS mobo for sure.

I have an asus and its the most unstable computer I've owned so far - battery completely shit itself 3 months into owning it and when I work on music production my processor usage randomly spikes from 20~% to 98% creating random glitches... would not recommend

I try and take no side in the mac vs pc issue but i've done music production on several different mac laptops and PC laptops and so far macs have been far more consistent, efficient in cooling (essential for a laptop..), processing, and overall more stable. It also depends what DAW you're using though - some perform better on macs than PC and visa versa (though honestly besides FLstudio I can't really think of any DAW that performs better on windows )

I just bought a hp dv6 for about 800$ new. The quad core amd sucks balls though the gpu is kick ass for what you pay. By the title of your post though, I'd go for an i5 min.

I'd get a Mac or a high-end Lenovo (a high-end model, they are not all made equal).

$800 is not a enough to get a nice one.  You probably need to go to $1200 IMO if you want something that's really quality.  There are cheaper options, but they won't hold up as well.
