second bachelors degree
    #15714729 -

so i've nearly finished my bachelor of arts majoring in anthropology and psychology and i'm thinking about doing a bachelor of science with a major in chemistry. i don't want to do post grad studies in the humanities right now and i think i would enjoy doing a bachelor of science but do you think this is a waste of time? should i just suck it up and get a job or go onto post grad studies?

Do you have unlimited money?

If I were in your shoes I'd get a good job within your skill set and start building a living.

School is fun an interesting but you can only go so long until people (banks) come looking for their money.  If you were interested in sciences to begin with you should have began with that and studied humanities on your own time.

Pro-tip:
Officially study what you plan to make your career, if you have time or once you finish your main interest sit in on courses that interest you without paying.  No opportunity to get official paperwork saying you've done it but you continue learning and don't have to pay for it.

in Australia the government will pay for your degree until you are earning enough to pay them back. the debt doesn't bother me though because i think it would be worth it. it's just a matter of figuring out what i want to do next.

If you were interested in sciences to begin with you should have began with that and studied humanities on your own time.

i'm interested in both science and the arts.

You can learn for free in so many different ways.  From what you say it seems like you have to pay for all your degrees once you start making a substantial amount of money.  Your talking about the difference between 100k and 200k+ (although I don't know the price of education in Australia) and combine that with the price of living and you're fucked.

I'm majoring in physics, then I have a choice for graduate school. A lot of physics majors go into law, a lot go into medicine, a lot go into economics, and obviously a lot go into physics. I want to go into particle physics.

The only thing is, I've taken the full history of art (from cave paintings to contemporary), and jesus christ I've fallen in love. Art history is just fucking amazing, the polar opposite of physics but in my eyes you need both sides of the spectrum for the best perspective on life.

Anyways, If I were to go and get a masters in art history it would be way later in life..

But again, I took a cultural anthropology class and wow, I had the most amazing teacher and that class blew my mind.. but as a career? I don't think I could commit to working in the field, as in some island somewhere with a translator..

Chemistry is awesome, but I'll proabably just study that in my own time after I learn quantum physics, which is basically a different view a chemistry.

I figured you for a physics nerd, what with your Law of Universal Gravitation in your sig.  I'm learning Coulomb's Law right now, basically the same thing.

I think a career in physics will be an extremely fufilling career.

I'm still a sophomore right now, got a way's to go..

A degree in chemistry definitely won't be a waste of time. It offers more solid job opportunities than your anthropology/psychology degree. At least, that would be the case where I live.

yeah it's the same in oz. it would be great to hear from someone who's done both degrees but that's not really a path most people take which is why i'm ambivalent about it.

See if you can go directly into a MS program since you already have a bachelor.  It will probably cost you an extra semester or two, as you will be required to take some undergrad "science" courses to get caught up.

really? so i could do a year of undergraduate chemistry subjects and then go straight into post grad science studies. do you think that might be jumping the gun a bit?

a waste of time are degrees in Anthropology, XXXX History, Humanities,
XXXX studies. these are liberal arts degrees which tend to be worthless in
the real world. where would you believe you'd be working with a degree in
anthropology? probably burger king since only around 6000 people are
working in the anthropology field and I'm willing to wager many of those
are teachers, sure there's a possibility you could do some consulting work
but it's hard to come by and they tend to seek people already established
in the field and even then you're looking at a salary of around $30k

a BS in chemistry would open far more doors in hundreds of fields with a
better starting pay rate of around $40k with a possibility of earning more
than $100k. get your BS in chemistry look at the market to see what the
potential is, if the market is good take a job and continue your studies
as you can, if the market sucks then stay in school

make use of this site when you need help pondering what field of study you
want but stay out of liberal arts, it's worthless and should only be used
to satisfy your own desire to learn

Yup...I received a Bachelors in Arts degree in high school, and even though I've moved onto college, a lot of jobs look at that degree and laugh. There isn't many things you can do with those types of degrees.

Hmm depends on what you want to do I guess.  I earned a bachelor of music and now I'm back in school earning a bachelor of science in computer science.  It probably wouldn't be possible for you to go straight into a masters in chemistry but I would check first.

edit:  Talk to the schools that you are interested in applying to see what programs that they offer.  It might be possible to grab an M.S. at certain schools but that at others you can only get a B.S.

There is a lack of male geologists in the world, and you can make good money straight out of school and choose to work basically anywhere in the world.

Idk how well a chem degree would fit in, but if you're a guy, I'd apply to those types of jobs. I'm sure chemistry can tie into parts of geology, and it's environmental.

I'd take a serious look at job prospects offered with a chemistry degree.

In the U.S., a BS will qualify you for laboratory technician jobs (e.g., a pipette jockey) with low pay and only moderate promotion potential.
