anyone decided to distance themselves from parents for their own wellbeing? this is hurting me
    #15576226 -

alright so i was adopted, not that that necessarily matters but it seems like the universe is basically telling me more and more that i need to stay away from my parents. to cut it short, they are pretty much very negative people, they aren't accepting of people for who they are... and i've grown up to realize that i am SUCH a different person than they are... i keep telling myself that i love them, and the truth is that i really do... but at the same time i keep getting these glimpses of understanding they they are never going to fully accept who i am... it almost feels like a test, like i'm maybe not supposed to be with them anymore.. gotta follow my heart

i just got in the stupidest argument ever with my father. he was acting very childish and trying to be controlling of me basically and it really hurt my feelings... i plan on spending time away asap to let the fog clear

anyways i was just wondering specifically about anyone who has literally decided it best to just abandon their parents and make their own life.. just feeling a little let down and hurt. but hey, that's life. writing this out actually made me feel heaps better

Hopefully they'll learn to accept you. If you love them and they love you, you guys will come to some sort of agreement or acceptance of each other. Just my 2c.

Live your own life as you want it. No need to cut any and all ties though.

My parents live far from me (other side of the country for my mom, and other side of the world for my dad) however I keep in contact and try to visit them at least once a year. My Dad is finally coming back to the states here soon (he's getting out of the army after 23 years) so that kind of exiting for me.

Don't cut ties just because you are a different person though. I was kind of in the same mindset as you are now 4 years ago. Didn't talk to my parents for the better part of a year. Grew to understand and appreciate our differences though.

You can get worked up about their acceptance of your lifestyles, however this may be a losing battle. Instead, become more accepting of theirs and live it up.

I had a major falling out with my parents and was kicked out of the house when I was 16. Thankfully I've since repaired both relationships, family means a lot to me.

As your therapist I recommend slamming 200 mg of crystal meth after throwing back a couple shots of bourbon.  Repeat as necessary until your issues become wholly irrelevant.  :syringe:

i havent talked to my dad since i was 14-15. by "talked" i mean i havent had a conversation with him.

last month when my sister and i were headed to my moms for thanksgiving we had to stop there on the way because my sister was having him watch her dog (she couldnt take it to my moms, since my moms dog and my sisters dog dont get along) so i saw him for the first time in.... i dunno, a really fucking long time. i said hi just to be polite but that was it. no conversation.

he's a nice guy and im honestly really proud of him for all the great things he has done in his life, but with respect to how we live our lives we are drastically different and will never see eye-to-eye on quite a few things. not only that, but his wife is obnoxious. i cant stand her. she has good intentions and isnt mean, but shes OBNOXIOUS.

i'd rather just save myself the agony of interacting with them so i dont talk to or see them ever.

That's sad. I bet you'll come to regret that one day.

um, sure?

i have plenty of other reasons that i dont talk to him but i didnt feel like getting into the intimate details of why my mom and dad are divorced in the first place. i listed the less personal stuff, because everything else is none of your damn business.

dont question my decisions when you dont even know half the story.

You're right but there's no reason to post about it if you don't want to tell the whole story. We can only comment on what you post.
