help with moving to cali
    #15513149 -

hey there pub!
so my girlfriend and i have been discussing moving to california...
but we're having trouble even beginning to decide where IN california.

Can someone with knowledge about the state please help us out?

Here are our requirements/wishes:

-Not in the middle of a big city, but not very far away from one (maybe 10-20 mins?)

-Whatever city that is should have a lot of bars/etc. that have live music (i currently make my living as a musician... i'm nervous about that working out in california as well, but i guess we'll see)

-needs to be inexpensive

-hopefully somewhat close to the shore

-cool people

i know that's a lot to ask of any area, but if someone could even at least point us in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated! :hatsoff:

Anywhere in the bay area is too expensive for you most likely unless you want to live in a shithole city. Arcatia, humbolt, chico, monterey, santa cruz, santa barbara are all nice places.

Farther towards coast is higher in price as I see it.
I live in cali and call it cali so don't trip haha

I'd say look east of the bay area. Out here distance is perceived differently in a way. An hour drive is nothing (kind of like a 10-20minute trip) you can live in decent sized cities for cheap and go to the big city and it's surrounding city's for fun. I wouldn't wanna live in the bay, outside expenses it's just dangerous, congested, slow traffic... I'd make it a place to visit and trust me you'll love it. Live west of Yosemite but east of Dublin. Look in the Stockton "Area" (not specifically Stockton)

Youll have access to
The bay area ie San Francisco... Oakland
The heady cities. Berkeley... Santa Cruz.
The capital. Sacramento
The snow... Arnold, Yosemite any big trees kinda place
Most of the cities mentioned have culture and nightlife...
The bay is completely accessible with "Bart" look it up.

these two things are more or less mutually exclusive...the closer you are to the coast, the price of your residence increases exponentially. you don't even wanna know how much a tiny little place right next to the beach costs. luckily for me my dad's side of the family has a house that's been in the family for decades and has been paid off, and it's like a two minute walk from the beach.

:vibin:

it's gonna suck when my aunts and uncles decide they wanna sell that shit though

seriously though your best bet as far as that goes is to look for a place as far inland as possible while still being within a day's drive of the beach

If you want to live in skinrow or china town it's going to run you $650-$700 a month in san francisco. To live in the cheapest family neighborhood it's $950-$1000 a month. No way your getting lower on that one.

In santa cruz you can get a three bedroom house with a backyard for a $1100 a month.

San Francisco is really, really fucking expensive when it comes to rent man.

I looked at a one bedroom on Larkin up in The Tender Knob, it was $1300 a month.  Total 600 square foot spot.

That rent would have been just a little under half my monthly income.  Add on top of that Food, Transportation and Addiction.  GOOD thing I didn't take that lease because I would be screwed right now.

Arcata is pretty full up. Rent is expensive and its really competitive toget in a place. Yeap, exerything else is expensive in frontier country with the nearest big cities ove 200 miles away on mostly two lane highways ..

Good luck finding inexpensive living anywhere near the shore and the city (let alone one or the other).

Even living in the valley is getting more expensive, and there's a lot less jobs out there.
(Some of the worst unemployment rates in the country.)

You pay a lot to live in California, and the job situation is still pretty dismal all over.
